Philippines: Boxer Cuello and Sonsona shocks Mexican foe

FILIPINO boxing warrior Denver Cuello captured the Silver World Boxing Council (WBC) Minimumweight World Champion belt and returning Marvin ‘The Marvelous’ Sonsona began his redemption with a bang after crushing his Mexican opponent.
Cuello didn’t waste time despite the boos from the hostile crowd as he knocked Mexican Carlos Perez out in the first round of their title bout for the vacant WBC belt Saturday night at the Centro Convenciones in Chetumal Quintana Roo in Mexico.
The taller Perez tried to bully Cuello in the first round with count-ered right straight, but Cuello’s right timing and hard hitting combinations in the body imme-diately sent the Mexican to the canvass.
The referee called off the fight at 2:31 in the first round after Perez failed to beat the count as he struggled in pain. Cuello and manager Aljoe Jaro will return to Manila on Tuesday morning.
Cuello, with the win, may possibly grab the regular WBC Minimum weight Belt against WBC No. 1 Gannigan Lopez of Mexico, which he could possibly fight tentatively on December 2011 or January 2012.
Somewhere at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City Cebu Saturday, Sonsona, the former World Boxing Organization super flyweight champion, posted a unanimous 10-round decision against Mexican bantamweight Carlos Jacobo.
Sonsona, 21, controlled the fight with right powerful combinations from the opening bell and caught Jacobo with stiff jabs and some solid body shots. He rocked the Mexican with powerful uppercuts in round two although the Mexican managed to fight back.
Although there were blots on his defense, Sonsona overcame Jacobo’s attack by hitting the Mexican strong left in the late rounds, where the ruckus crowd chanting for a knockout win which didn’t happen.
All three judges gave Sonsona (15-1-1 with 12 knockouts) favorable scores. Edgar Olalo and Ben Necesario scored the fight 98-91 for Sonsona while Edwin Barrientos had Sonsona the winner 97-92.
Sonsona, who may possibly schedule another fight this December, showed his old deadly form and championship heart against Jacobo all in all after ten rounds in their fight called ‘Back with a Vengeance.”
