Malinga closes in on IBF title fight against Banal of PH

Former SA champion Vusi Malinga is set to fight for the vacant IBF bantamweight title soon.

Malinga and AJ Banal, a Filipino, will meet on a date and at a venue to be decided by their promoters within the next month.

If the promoters can’t come to an agreement, the fight will go to purse bids.

Malinga beat Michael Domingo, also from the Philippines, on points in a final eliminator in Mafikeng, now Mahikeng, on October 30, 2010.

The South African, whose record now stands at 20-3-1, with 12 knockouts, was due to challenge Abner Mares of Mexico for his title.

Filipino coaches to train Brunei athletes

FILIPINO coaches were commissioned to train Brunei’s national athletes in connection with the two countries’ memorandum of understanding on sports cooperation.

The agreement was discussed in a joint committee meeting in the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan attended by Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Ricardo Garcia.

Accompanied by Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Nestor Ochoa and Brunei Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Hazair, Garcia paid a courtesy call to His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah at the Royal Palace.

“We already enjoy a very close cooperation which we wish to expand in terms of sharing information, sports techniques and technical officiating,” said Hazair who was in Manila last year to discuss the details of agreement.

Hazair is also seeking assistance in the staging of international sports events in preparation for its hosting of the Southeast Asian Games on 2017.

While visiting the sports facilities, Garcia invited Brunei athletes to train in the Philippines and play with Filipino national athletes.

BRUNEI sports officials are requesting the help of the Philippine Sports Commission in staging international meets as part of the Sultanate’s preparations for its staging of the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, according to PSC chief Richie Garcia.

On the invitation of Brunei Sports Minister Pehin Hazair, Garcia went to the Brunei capital of Bandar Seri Bagawan last weekend to see for himself how the PSC could help.

Under the agreement, Filipino coaches in athletics, basketball, golf and softball are now giving pointers to Brunei national athletes.

Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia and Brunei Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Hazair signed the memorandum of agreement recently, also attended by Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Nestor Ochoa.

Nonito Donaire wins WBO super bantamweight title vs Vazquez

LOS ANGELES — Nonito Donaire knocked down Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in the ninth round en route to a split decision over the former champ on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in a super bantamweight title bout in San Antonio, Texas.

Donaire, a former International Boxing Federation flyweight and World Boxing Council bantamweight title holder, claimed the World Boxing Organization belt in his first foray at super bantamweight.

The 12-round bout was on the undercard of the World Boxing Council middleweight title fight between unbeaten champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Marco Antonio Rubio at the Alamodome.

Donaire, of the Philippines, brought plenty of his power with him into the heavier weight class, dropping Vazquez in the ninth with a left uppercut followed by a left hook.

Donaire had rocked Vazquez in the third round and appeared in control until the Puerto Rican began to assert himself in the fifth and sixth rounds.

Despite the tenacity of Vazquez, Donaire said he was surprised that judge Ruben Garcia scored the bout 115-112 for the Puerto Rican.

Judges Levi Martinez and Don Trella both saw it 117-110 for Donaire, who said he hurt his left hand early in the bout and displayed what appeared to be a bloodied hand wrap when he removed his gloves after the fight.

Donaire said fighting a bigger opponent "was tougher than I expected."

"I couldn't find my rhythm and I hurt my hand somewhere between the second and fourth rounds," he said. "I could only move it a little bit."

Donaire, who also once held the World Boxing Association interim super flyweight championship but not the official crown, improved to 28-1 with 18 knockouts.

Vazquez fell to 21-2-1 with 17 wins inside the distance.

Their fight was for the WBO belt Vazquez lost to Jorge Arce, who then vacated it to fight for the bantamweight belt Donaire relinquished when he moved up in weight.

Now Donaire can look forward to potential match-ups with Arce and Japan's WBC champion Toshiaki Nishioka.

"I'm definitely staying at 122 (pounds) for awhile," Donaire said, indicating he needs time to adjust to the new division. "I'm not happy with my performance today ... We will go back to the drawing board."

Donaire Outpoints 'disrespectful' Vazquez

MANILA, Philippines – Newly crowned World Boxing Organization super bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire said he has no respect for the man he defeated, Puerto Rican boxer Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.

Although Vazquez was respectful towards Donaire in the lead-up to the fight, the two boxers nearly fought during the weigh-in. Vazquez touched the cap Donaire was wearing during the weigh-in, and Donaire retaliated by pulling at Vazquez’s skull cap.

The two boxers exchanged heated words and engaged in a shoving match, but their handlers immediately pulled them apart.

Donaire ended up defeating Vazquez via a split decision, and he said the Puerto Rican fighter approached him after the fight.

"Sabi n'ya, business lang to. May respecto ako sa 'yo, gusto ko lang ma-excite ang fans," Donaire said.

"Okay, whatever. Wala na akong respeto sa 'yo kasi, not only you disrespected my country, not only you disrespected my wife and my team, you disrespected boxing as well," Donaire said of his response to Vazquez.

Donaire hurt left fist in maiden 122 lb fight

MANILA, Philippines—Nonito Donaire Jr. showed he still has the power at 122 pounds, but his hands took a pounding.

This was evident Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila) when The Filipino Flash hacked out a split decision win over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. to grab the World Boxing Organization super bantamweight crown in San Antonio, Texas.

In his initial foray into the super bantamweight ranks, Donaire proved his punching might when he became the first man to knock down the Puerto Rican Vazquez in the ninth round, landing a left uppercut followed by his lethal left hook.

That Donaire couldn’t finish Vazquez off may be largely due to the left-hand injury he sustained anywhere from the second to the fourth rounds of their 12-round showdown at the Alamodome.

Donaire later showed to the media a bloody left-hand wrap, caused by the scraping of his knuckles, which is mainly due to the recoil impact of every punch he landed on Vazquez.

Initial reports said Donaire, a former flyweight, super flyweight and bantamweight champ, sustained a minor fracture on his fist.

Philippines: Quake kills 43 in Negros Oriental - Army

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - At least 43 people died in Negros Oriental following a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the province Monday, an Army official said.

Twenty-nine people died in a landslide in Moog, Barangay Planas in Guihulngan City, and 10 other died in other parts of the city, according to Col. Francisco Patrimonio, commander of the Army's 302nd Infantry Brigade.

He said they are still trying to determine the exact number of people injured by the quake and landslide.

Two people died in Tayasan town, one was killed in Bindoy, and another one died in Jimalalod, all in Negros Oriental, Patrimonio said.

He said looting is now rampant in Guihulngan City, forcing the military to enforce tougher security in the quake-hit city.

Negros Oriental Gov. Roel de Gamo, meanwhile, said their own count shows 13 people confirmed dead in the province.

He added that 40 are reportedly missing in Barangay Planas alone.

Benito Ramos, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director, told ANC that they are still trying to verify the reports on the missing people.

"Mayroon mga missing, hindi ito confirmed. Mayroon report doon sa mga malalayong lugar na mayroon nag-landslide," he said. "Dalawang lugar po ito. La Libertad at Guihulngan," he said.

Search and rescue

Night has fallen, causing problems for search and rescue workers sent to area.

"Doon sa mga landslide area, walang ilaw doon. Kaya kailangan, flashlight-an ito ng Army truck, para iyung heavy equipment, mailawan," Ramos said.

He said local governments are coordinating with military and police for search and rescue operations.

He added that evacuation centers have been set up in the 2 areas.

"Iyung Army natin is conducting search and rescue operations sa Guihulngan and papasok yun dun pa sa La Libertad, via Navy na lang kasi na-isolate iyun," Patrimonio said.

"Busy na lahat sa Jimalalud sa rescue operation, so papasukan na lang namin ng separate units iyan by sea, Navy," he said. "Tatlong (areas) lang ang affected, Guihulngan City, La Libertad and Jimalalud, so we will concentrate our efforts sa 3 na ito."

Patrimonio said he has no report yet on the latest situation in Barangay Planas.

"Nasa loob kasi yan eh. Hintay ko lang yung tropa na nagpunta," he said. "Hindi pa natin makuha ngayon but there were quite a number of houses that sustained damages no, dito sa La Libertad meron daw nag-collapse na 3-storey building."

He said some of people killed in the other parts of the province died after being buried by walls and a building that collapsed.

The quake also damaged bridges in the province, according to Patrimonio.

Only light vehicles can now pass the Matilo bridge in La Libertad, the Ayungon bridge and Dayoyo bridge in Jimalalod.

More than 700 aftershocks recorded in Visayas, may last weeks–Phivolcs

State seismologists on Tuesday morning reported it has recorded more than 700 aftershocks from Monday's magnitude-6.9 quake that devastated the Negros area in Visayas, and warned of more possible aftershocks in the coming weeks.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology seismologist Winchell Sevilla said the most powerful as of 7 a.m. Tuesday occurred Monday night, measuring magnitude 6.2.

"Expect natin sa mga susunod na araw at perhaps sa susunod na linggo magkakaroon ng aftershock sa vicinity ng epicentral area," Sevilla said in an interview on dzBB radio.

The epicenter of the magnitude-6.9 quake, which was recorded at 11:49 a.m. Monday, was at 5 km northwest of Tayasan in Negros Oriental.

As of 6:30 a.m., radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported the Phivolcs had recorded 734 aftershocks, 55 of which were felt in Negros and other areas.

Casualties

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the death toll as of 12:30 a.m. Tuesday stood at 15, and at least 29 are missing and feared dead.

Military officials, on the other hand, placed the death toll at 43 as of Monday, with at least 29 killed due to landslides.

Over 700 aftershocks recorded in quake-hit Visayas

MANILA, Philippines – State seismologists have recorded over 700 aftershocks since a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the Negros-Cebu region on Monday.

Director Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a total of 745 aftershocks were felt as of 8:00 a.m. on Tuessday.

Solidum said more aftershocks may be recorded in the coming days. He explained such occurrences are normal after a major earthquake.

The strongest aftershock recorded so far has a magnitude of 6.2. It was recorded at 6:10 p.m. on Monday.

DUMAGUETE CITY—At least 52 people were killed when a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Negros and Cebu provinces shortly before noon Monday, causing landslides and huge cracks on highways, and violently shaking buildings, officials said.

A three-story building collapsed, while seven bridges were rendered impassable, they said.

In Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, at least 29 people were feared dead following a landslide in Barangay (village) Planas, Mayor Ernesto Reyes said in a phone interview. He said there could be more fatalities in other barangays.

“They were buried in 30 feet (10 meters) of soil. If you had been buried from noon until now (6 p.m.), I don’t expect you to be alive,” Reyes said.

Rescuers dug with picks and shovels trying to reach dozens of people trapped under houses that collapsed, according to The Associated Press (AP).

Bagyo "sendong" update: Death toll rose to 957 dead bodies

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (Updated 8:17 a.m.) -- The death toll from Tropical Storm Sendong (international codename: Washi) rose to 957, data from the national disaster council showed.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in its 6 a.m. Tuesday report said 957 were dead, 1,582 were injured and 49 others remain missing due to Sendong.

NDRRMC executive director Benito Ramos said the number of fatalities increased after more bodies were recovered in Cagayan de Oro.

Cagayan de Oro City's 25 barangays and 21 barangays from Iligan City were the hardest hit by the storm.

Water shortage

Residents of Cagayan de Oro City, which is now under state of calamity, have more than the battered houses, dead bodies, and missing relatives to deal with: water shortage.

Major water facilities of the Cagayan de Oro Water District (Cowd) were damaged by the flash flood brought by Sendong. The water district supplies 50 percent of the water needs of the city.

Another 30 percent of the city’s water needs is provided by bulk delivery, but this has been suspended. All in all, the city has lost 80 percent of its potable water supply system.

Water hydrants are being used at the moment, but this will not last long. Bottled water in stores is also running out.

The appeal for those who have the means to bring in relief goods is to prioritize clean, drinking water.

The Cowd said it will take at least a month to repair what were destroyed.

In a special session on Monday, the Cagayan de Oro City Council passed and approved a resolution inviting officials of Cowd, Department of Trade and Industries, Department of Social Welfare and Development and other concerned agencies to give updates on the status of water supply and prices of commodities, among others.

The flag at the Cagayan de Oro City Hall has been put in half-mast in sympathy to those who died in the incident.

Mass burial

Meanwhile, Iligan Mayor Lawrence Cruz said Monday he was suggesting a mass burial because of health concerns. Apart from the decomposing bodies, dead livestock lie scattered in the mud.

The proposed mass burial was opposed by the Department of Health (DOH), saying unclaimed corpses pose no health risks.

Among the diseases commonly associated with dead bodies include Hepatitis A, B, and C, salmonella, cholera, and rotavirus diarrhea.

The agency "does not recommend mass burials" for unclaimed corpses, DOH National Epidemiology Center Director Dr. Eric Tayag said. "Kung natatakot sila sa mga patay na katawan, na baka health hazard siya, walang health hazard yun. It’s dead kasi kaya baka isipin delikado, wala naman po."

He added that individual burials are better because it will help relatives to "move forward" from the sudden death of their loved ones.

"Bigyan ng mourning ang surviving families so they can move-on kasi may psychological effect yun e if they are not able to identify their dead and bury them properly," said Tayag.

Local officials have been forced to propose mass burials after funeral homes have been unable to process newly recovered corpses. (Sunnex)

Bagyo update: 800 remain missing as death toll jumps to 652

(UPDATE 9 - 7:36 PM) CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines - The number of fatalities from storm "Sendong" has breached the 600 mark as more bodies were recovered from Cagayan de Oro City, reports from the Philippine Red Cross showed.

Red Cross said the latest number of the dead is now at 652, which surpassed the number of fatalities of "Ondoy," which claimed 464 lives in Luzon in 2009. The devastated port cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in Mindanao island accounted for most of the deaths caused by Sendong, the agency said.

According to the Red Cross, at least 808 more remain missing after Sendong struck the southern Philippines, causing flash floods and landslides and driving tens of thousands from their homes.

As of posting time, the Cagayan de Oro City Disaster Risk and Management Council said 336 are dead while 467 are missing.

"Our office was swamped with hundreds of requests to help find their missing parents, children and relatives," Gwendolyn Pang, secretary-general of the PNRC, told reporters. "We're helping coordinate the search with local government, army, police and even other aid agencies."

Floods washed away entire houses with families inside in dozens of coastal villages in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

"This is the first time this has happened in our city," Vicente Emano, mayor of Cagayan de Oro, said in a radio interview. He said officials in the area did not receive adequate warning before the typhoon struck.

The state disaster agency said adequate warnings had been given to officials and residents three days before the typhoon made landfall on Friday.

Sendong, with winds gusting up to 90 kmh (56 mph), barrelled into the resource-rich island of Mindanao late on Friday, bringing heavy rain that also grounded some domestic flights and left wide areas without power.

Emergency workers, soldiers and police were recovering more bodies - most covered in mud - washed ashore in nearby towns.

"The affected area is so wide and huge and I believe they have not really gone to all areas to do a search. Also... many of the houses were washed out so that means the houses and the bodies were displaced," Pang told AFP.

Disaster and health officials were struggling to deal with the scores of bodies that have been recovered. Some were stacked one on top of each other in under-staffed mortuaries that were unable to cope with the numbers of dead.

"I saw for myself bloated bodies of women and children, not less than 100," Vice President Jejomar Binay told Philippines radio as he toured the worst hit areas in Cagayan de Oro.

Almost 35,000 people remained huddled in evacuation centers after the storm, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

Rescue and relief efforts were hampered by power outages in many areas including Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities as well as by damaged and destroyed bridges, the council added.

Another 21 people drowned on the central island of Negros, the PNRC said.

Another 47 fatalities were also recorded in Bukidnon. Earlier, the NDRRMC reported that five people died from a landslide that hit Compostela Valley while three others drowned in Zamboanga del Norte.

The NDRRMC said a total of 19,234 families or over 106,000 persons were affected by the storm from 11 provinces across the country. A total of 184 houses were also damaged.

National Police chief Nicanor Bartolome has ordered the deployment of 200 cops to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan to aid in search operations and relief distribution.

Bartolome said one company each from Region 11 and Caraga were sent to these two cities to augment forces in the area.

Bartolome assured the public that law enforcement operations in other parts of Mindanao will not be hampered by the deployment of more cops to disaster response.

431 rescued

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC reported that authorities were able to rescue 431 persons from the floods, including 30 crew members of a cargo ship that capsized off Dumaguete City in Negros and 250 residents in Cagayan de Oro.

Hundreds were also unaccounted for, most of them from a coastal village in Iligan. Houses were swept into the sea by floodwaters while people were sleeping inside late on Friday.

The Philippines social welfare department said about 100,000 people were displaced and brought to nearly three dozen shelters in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.

President Aquino met with cabinet members and disaster officials to assess conditions on the main southern island and ordered a review of disaster plans to avoid a repeat of the tragedy. He is due to inspect typhoon-hit areas after Christmas.

"These areas will be at risk every year... The first (step in) mitigation has to be relocation from these areas," he said in a meeting with senior civil defence officials.

Rescue boats pulled at least 15 people from the sea, said another army spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang.

Surprise

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz said many people were caught by surprise when water rose one metre (three feet) high in less than an hour, forcing people onto roofs. "Most of them were already sleeping when floodwaters entered their homes. This is the worst flooding our city has experienced in years."

The national disaster agency said it could not estimate crop and property damage because emergency workers, including soldiers and police officers, were evacuating families and recovering casualties.

Benito Ramos, head of the NDRRMC told reporters Mindanao residents were warned about the dangers posed by the storm days earlier but elected not to move to safer areas.

He said Mindanao was rarely visited by storms, even as 20 major storms strike the Philippines annually, with most hitting Luzon, the largest and most populous island in the Southeast Asian archipelago.

"We expect huge damage, especially on agriculture," Ramos said.

Two of the three rivers that flow into the port of Iligan had overflowed, he added, and a popular radio commentator was among those killed.

Other affected areas on Mindanao included Bukidnon province, where 47 people died, while nine others people were killed elsewhere on the island, Pang of the Red Cross said.

State of Calamity

Twenty-five people meanwhile drowned on the island of Negros, the provincial civil defense office told AFP.

"What happened was beyond the expectation of the public," said the civil defense official, Minda Morante.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Sunday Dumaguete City and the municipality of Valencia in Negros Oriental have been declared under a state of calamity.

The NDRRMC reported that in the province of Negros Oriental alone, a total of 4,755 families or 23,775 persons were affected due to the storm. Majority of these were from Dumaguete City.

The storm caused the Amlan River to overflow, closing down the Amlan Bridge. Some roadways connecting to the national highway were also closed due to knee-deep floods in Tanjay, San Jose also in Negros Oriental. The Okoy River overflowed and affected low-lying areas Sibulan and other towns, the NDRRMC said.

A steel bridge at Brgy. Palimpinon, Valencia connecting Balugo to Valencia was destroyed and Tanjay Bridge along the national highway was damaged and closed to vehicles.

The NDRRMC reported that a cargo ship “Ever Transport Cargo” anchored at Brgy. Calindagan, Dumaguete City sank due to strong winds and big waves. The cargo ship is owned by Kherl Lines loaded with Asia Brewery products.

More than 4,000 people in flooded areas were moved to evacuation centres, the disaster agency in Manila said.

WBO featherweight world champion Orlando Salido (37-11-2, 25 KOs) survived two knockdowns and a real scare to eventually stop Filipino Weng Haya (14-5, 8 KOs) in the eighth round of a scheduled 10-round non-title bout in Mexico.

For the first 2 3/4 rounds, Haya was completely on his bike, almost flat-out running from the stalking Salido. Then, with seconds left in the third round a perfectly-timed counter left hand dropped Salido hard. The featherweight titlist beat the count, but he was clearly dazed and saved by the bell.

Salido came out for the fourth, still on unsteady legs, and was dropped again, this time by a straight left hand.

The crafty veteran was able to fall back and rely on his deep knowledge of boxing fundamentals to play defense while regaining his composure. By the fifth, Salido had his legs back under him and began to box a more sound, intelligent fight.

The end of the contest came in the eighth, when a shot from Salido sent Haya to the ropes, obviously hurt. Salido rushed his injured opponent and dropped him. Haya would beat the count, but would be ruled unable to continue by the referee.

In the co-feature, former super flyweight world titlist,Cristian Mijares (44-6-2, 20 KOs), making his junior featherweight debut, stopped Alejandro Valdez (25-7-2, 19 KOs) at the 1:24 mark of the third round.

In the third, Mijares landed a combination that sent Valdez hard to the canvas. Somehow, the former world title challenger managed to beat the count and make it to his feet, but only long enough to sustain a few more heavy shots. At the end, it was a foot race between Valdez’s corner and the ref to save a helpless Valdez.

China executes Filipino "lethal Injection"

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A Filipino man convicted on drug trafficking charges was executed in China on Thursday despite an appeal for clemency from President Benigno Aquino III on humanitarian grounds, Philippine officials said.

Hours before he was put to death, the 35-year-old man, who was not identified, was allowed to meet briefly with his two siblings and two cousins who traveled to southern Guangxi province, Vice President Jejomar Binay told reporters.

The man was then led to a courtroom where the sentence was read and whisked away to the death chamber, located in Liuzhou, about two hours away from the prison, where he was given a lethal injection, he said.

"The subject was very calm, but his family was crying," Binay said. "At 12:30 (p.m.) our countryman was executed."

The man was arrested in 2008 at Guilin International Airport while trying to smuggle 3.3 pounds (1.5 kilograms) of heroin from Malaysia. Smuggling more than 1.76 ounces (50 grams) of heroin or other drugs is punishable by death in China.

Although China went ahead with the execution despite Aquino's appeal for clemency, government officials have said they respect China's judicial system and that the execution would not hurt bilateral relations.

Overlapping territorial claims over potentially gas-rich islands in the South China Sea have strained ties between the Philippines and China.

China is the world's biggest executioner, according to Amnesty International. The Philippines and Cambodia are Southeast Asia's only nations to have abolished the death penalty.

In March, China executed three Filipino workers also convicted of smuggling heroin despite last-minute appeals and political concessions by Philippine leaders. The Philippine government said it was able to prove that a drug syndicate had taken advantage of the Filipinos.

The head of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Jose Gutierrez Jr., said earlier that authorities were hunting for the recruiter of the executed drug mule, who is suspected to be a member of an African drug trafficking syndicate. He said the man convicted in China had previously engaged in drug trafficking and was paid $4,000 to $6,000 for every smuggling operation.

On the streets, reaction was mixed.

Manny Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum has scoffed at suggestions he is obstructing the Filipino's route to a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

Top Rank chief Arum has been criticised by members of Pacquiao's team for his reluctance to do business with Golden Boy Promotions, who help to organise Mayweather's bouts. It is reported that Arum's preference is for Pacquiao to face Juan Manuel Marquez.

But Arum has moved to cool fears that he is stopping the Mayweather fight from taking place on May 5 in Las Vegas. "Certainly, we at Top Rank want that fight, Manny wants that fight, I believe Floyd wants that fight," Arum said in a RingTV interview. "So why wouldn't I be optimistic?

"It doesn't necessarily have to be on May 5. If Floyd wants to fight Pacquiao, maybe another day is preferable."

Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach has told Arum to put aside any personal grievances and act in the best interests of his fighter. "The thing is, this is not personal. This is business," he said.

"I hate when personal feelings get brought into the equation. It's stupid. The thing is that Bob Arum and Don King didn't always get along, but they did business. There's no reason that they [Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy supremo and Arum] shouldn't be able to make it happen."

Cotto wants rematch with Pacquiao after his Impressive win against Margarito

Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto believes that if he's given a rematch with Manny Pacquiao in 2012, he would this time defeat the Filipino icon, avenging his 2009 shellacking at Pacquiao's hands:

"I have no doubt about it [that I would beat Pacquiao in a rematch]. With the right encouragement and with the people that are now in my team, we have no doubt that,"

Cotto told Esteban Pagan.

We've discussed this idea in brief on the site, and I said then that I'm in favor of the rematch under the condition that a fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr cannot be finalized.

I would pick Pacquiao to win. He was that much better than Cotto (37-2, 30 KO) in 2009 that it's tough to see a different outcome this time. Plus, Miguel hasn't made the 147-pound limit since that fight, and while I have no doubt he could do so without much problem, there's the chance that the last two or three pounds could turn out to be more hassle than I expect.

But I like the fight still. I was a bigger fan of their first fight than most, and I've always wondered what might have happened in that fight if, when Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO) turned it up after four rounds and completely took over the fight, Cotto would have had someone in his corner who knew what they were doing. Joe Santiago was Cotto's trainer for that fight, and wasn't really his trainer. That was just his title.

Santiago is not a boxing trainer. He did Cotto no favors against Joshua Clottey, where only Clottey's own mental mistakes lost him the fight, and less than no favors against Manny Pacquiao. It's not that I'm trying to insult Santiago here, you understand, just that a total novice should not be leading the corner for fights on that level, ever. Miguel Cotto deserves better than that.

And he has that now in Pedro Diaz, who helped Cotto get into great shape and come up with a good game plan, and also kept him sticking to that game plan in the rematch with Antonio Margarito last Saturday.

If Juan Manuel Marquez wants too much, if the Mayweather fight can't be made, I'll take a Pacquiao vs Cotto rematch any time. It's got a great story, in which Miguel Cotto tries to get his win back from Pacquiao, now the only man that Cotto has faced as a pro and never beaten. I'd definitely like see Pacquiao vs Cotto II if the other option is Pacquiao against Timothy Bradley.

Pacquiao: Mayweather deal is almost done "sign floyd"

MANILA, Philippines - WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao said the other day his much-awaited showdown with WBC titlist Floyd Mayweather Jr. is 80 to 90 percent sure to take place on May 5 next year and only a few more details are being ironed out before contracts are finalized.

Neither the venue nor the purses was disclosed by Pacquiao who said it was a blessing in disguise that his recent win over Juan Manuel Marquez was close because Mayweather probably wouldn’t have agreed to face him if the fight was one-sided in his favor.

Pacquiao said a sharing of the fight revenues was under discussion but implied a 50-50 split. Mayweather was the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter until he quit the ring and was succeeded by Pacquiao. Mayweather has since returned to action and is trying to reclaim the prestigious honor. Both are welterweight champions with Pacquiao recognized by the WBO and Mayweather by the WBC, making their duel a unification match.

Pacquiao broke the news during a dinner he hosted for Filipino print journalists at the Harbour View Restaurant, Luneta, last Monday. He even checked the 2012 calendar on his phone to confirm if May 5 – the Cinco de Mayo holiday in Mexico – fell on a Saturday. The date conveniently is on a Saturday so it will be shown live in Manila on Sunday morning. The fight will likely be staged in Las Vegas.

As for Mayweather’s demand for Olympic-style drug testing, Pacquiao said it was no longer an issue. The fighters will agree to drug-testing procedures stipulated by the governing state athletic commission.

Pacquiao said he won’t back down from fighting anybody “if the price is right” and even mentioned the possibility of a rematch with WBC superwelterweight champion Miguel Cotto who stopped Mexico’s Antonio Margarito in New York City last weekend. Both Cotto and Margarito have lost to Pacquiao. Margarito suffered a fractured orbital bone in bowing to Pacquiao on points last year and his damaged eye was battered repeatedly by Cotto in their recent brawl. Margarito has been advised to seriously consider retirement.

It will be recalled that in 2008, Pacquiao won a close split decision over Marquez who insisted he was robbed. Pacquiao went on to beat David Diaz, Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Cotto, Joshua Clottey, Margarito, Sugar Shane Mosley and Marquez in that order to solidify his status as the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter. The same pattern is expected from Pacquiao coming off another tight win over Marquez. Experts predict he will bounce back with a bang.

WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria’s chief second Ruben Gomez, who was Pacquiao’s cutman in his early US fights, said Mayweather is hard to hit but predicted the Filipino to win. “Mayweather isn’t heavy-handed,” said Gomez. “He uses his shoulder to limit what his opponent can hit. He’s a counterpuncher like Marquez but I think Manny can break down his style with his speed and power.”

Gomez, an American of Mexican descent, said there was no doubt in his mind that Pacquiao beat Marquez in their third fight. “There would’ve been no fight if Manny wasn’t aggressive,” he said. “Manny made that fight and should be given credit for it. To be honest, I was shocked to see Marquez so big and so strong. Sure, it was close like those three fights between Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton. Styles make fights and every time Manny and Marquez fight, you’ll end up with a close decision. That’s just how it is in boxing.”

Pacquiao said he will join the TV broadcast panel as a commentator to work Viloria’s title defense against Mexico’s Giovani Segura at the Ynares Sports Center, Pasig, this Sunday morning.

“Segura’s a dangerous opponent and a very hard puncher,” said Pacquiao. “But Viloria has a lot of skills. I expect Viloria to win but he’s got to fight with a lot of heart because Segura’s the kind of fighter who’ll just keep charging in until he’s stopped.”

LA Galaxy overwhelm scores to beat Philippine Azkals, 6-1

MANILA, Philippines – International football star David Beckham, on possibly his last game with the Los Angeles Galaxy, kickstarted a scoring barrage by the Galaxy in a 6-1 victory over the Philippine Azkals Saturday.

Greg Berhalter and Adam Cristman capped Los Angeles’ domination with two more goals in the last 10 minutes.

Berhalter scored on a penalty kick in the 81st minute and Cristmas followed up with his second goal of the night just after five minutes before a sizeable crowd at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

The English football sensation, whose contract with Galaxy has expired, struck with a curling effort in the 20th minute, finding the right top corner of the goal.

Beckham, who was reported to have been contractually-obliged to play for at least 45 minutes, played on for 27 more minutes in the second half.

In a television interview after game, Beckham was asked about his extra minutes in the second half to which he admitted that he wanted to play again when saw boxing icon Manny Pacquiao arrive in the stadium because he was such a huge fan of the Filipino great.

After finally being taken out of the game, TV cameras showed Beckham approach Pacquiao and hand him his jersey before they both walked out of the stadium.

Striker Mike Magee latched onto a pass from Landon Donovan, America’s leading goal scorer, in the 38th minute while Keane, Ireland’s all-time scorer, also delivered just a minute into the second half.

The Philippines’ lone goal came from Phil Younghusband, who pulled one back home in the 40th minute with a left-footed strike.

Younghusband had countless of misses, including one in the 56th minute which hit the crossbar.

MANILA, Philippines—Drenched in sweat, he rushed out of the pitch and took off his jersey before handing it to his idol seated at the VIP area.

Even David Beckham gets enthralled by the mere presence of Manny Pacquiao.

“I couldn’t wait to get off the field when I saw him (Pacquiao). I’m a huge fan,” shared Beckham, who kickstarted the LA Galaxy’s 6-1 win over the Philippine Azkals with his patented strike.

“He’s a talented man and good person. I saw him walking during the game, it was exciting,” added Beckham, whose game against the Philippines was believed to be his second to the last game as part of the Galaxy before going back to Europe.

The English football star awed the sellout crowd at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium with a curling strike that went up and over Azkals’ keeper Eduard Sacapano in the 20th minute.

Incidentally, both Beckham and Pacquiao have just come off stunning victories.

Beckham led the Galaxy to the Major League Soccer Cup title a little over a week after Pacquiao edged Marquez in their trilogy to retain his WBO welterweight crown last month.

In another grand gesture, Beckham went back to the post-game conference just to give a signed jersey to Phil Younghusband.

Asked whether he would like to return to Manila, Beckham answered: “We’d love to come back.”

Beckham and American star striker Landon Donovan, who were said to play only in the first half, logged more than 70 minutes.

The pound-for-pound king along with his wife, Jinkee, and kids arrived just minutes before the first half ended.

Ginebra bucks Caguioa's absence, trips Alaska

Ginebra survived losing Mark Caguioa in the fourth quarter as the Gin Kings turned back a tough Alaska side, 85-77, to stay on track for a playoff berth in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.

The Kings went to Ronald Tubid and Mike Cortez down the stretch in clinching the hard-earned win, improving Ginebra’s record to 5-5 with four games left before it ends its elimination round campaign.

Tubid only scored a field goal the entire ballgame but came at the right time as his lone attempt, a fastbreak lay-up, stretched Ginebra’s shaky two-point lead to 81-77 with two minutes and nine seconds to go.

Then Cortez sealed the deal with a pull-up jumper off Jay-R Reyes in the final 30 seconds for an 83-77 Kings lead.

“It was a crucial game for us," said Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen. “It has the potential to be a do or die. It will be hard for us to bounce back if we lose this game. But it was a good gauge on how we want to stay competitive."

The Kings did stay competitive despite missing Caguioa’s services in the final eight minutes of the contest after the Ginebra guard twisted his right ankle. Caguioa finished with seven points on 3-of-9 shooting before sitting out the rest of the game.

Ginebra also played minus young big man Rico Maierhofer owing to a swollen knee.

Nino Canaleta played his best game since donning the Ginebra jersey with a team-high 21 points, but shot 8-of-21 from the floor, while Cortez and JC Intal added 13 and 12 markers each.

Sonny Thoss finished with 13 points and seven rebounds to lead five other Alaska players in double figures.

The Aces, however, only scored 12 points in the fourth as they fell to a 3-8 record.

A Tony Dela Cruz basket pulled Alaska within two, 79-77, in the 2:56 mark of the final period.

That proved to be the Aces’ final stand as the Kings scored the game’s final six points to take the fight out of the 13-time league champions. —

MANILA, Philippines – Boxing trainer Robert Garcia said former super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. is an ideal opponent for Filipino-American boxer Nonito Donaire Jr.

Garcia, who trains Donaire, said Vazquez is a good match for the “Filipino Flash" especially after Donaire’s unimpressive bout against Omar Narvaez.

"Narvaez just wanted to survive. He is very defensive and didn't want to fight. We know that Vazquez will come to fight," said Garcia in Boxingscene.com.

Top Rank is currently arranging the Donaire-Vazquez fight. The bout will be Donaire’s first in the super bantamweight level.

Vazquez is the son of Puerto Rican boxing legend Wilfredo Vazquez Sr.

"I talked to (Donaire's manager) Cameron (Dunkin) a couple times. I've been in Mexico but it looks like it is going to happen. Vazquez is perfect for Nonito. One thing about Vazquez is that he can bang and he has pop. It should be a good action fight," said Garcia.

Filipino boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao on Monday belittled "losing" his title as the world's best pound-for-pound fighter in a Yahoo! Sports poll.

Pacquiao also said that while he also wanted a one-sided win over Juan Manuel Marquez last week, he realized that things cannot go one's way all the time.

"Di ko alam saan lumabas yan. Siguro sa ibang tao na siguro hindi dugong Pinoy ang nag-isip ng ganyan," he said of "losing" the pound-for-pound king title to Floyd Mayweather Jr., at a press conference at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport shortly after arriving from the United States.

Earlier reports said Pacquiao fell to No. 2 based on Yahoo! Sports' pound-for-pound list, with analysts saying his narrow win over Marquez had much to do with it.

Pacquiao said he remains thankful to God and to Filipinos who continue to support him.

He urged his non-believers to be true to themselves and show they are real Filipinos.

"Salamat sa sambayanang Pilipino sa walang sawang pagsuporta at sa Panginoon (I thank the Filipino people for their unwavering support, and I thank God)," he said.

On the other hand, Pacquiao admitted he would have wanted a one-sided win, but acknowledged one could not always get what one wishes for.

Maasin City, Southern Leyte – “Prince” Albert Pagara of the ALA Gym weighed 115 ¼ lbs while his opponent Henry Acha of Bukidnon stepped in at 113 lbs during the official weigh-in held Sunday noon inside the city’s provincial hospital.

They will engage in an eight-round bout this Monday November 21 at the Maasin City Gym. The unbeaten 17 year old Pagara will headline a professional card in the city where he traces his roots for the third time this year. Last May he knocked out Anthony Galigao in one round and three months later stopped Rogen Flores in four rounds.

Last month, Pagara fought on the undercard of Pinoy Pride IX in Bacolod City and scored three knockdowns in beating Shabani Madilu of Tanzania by unanimous decision. Acha has fought and lost to former world title challengers Jether Oliva and Sonny Boy Jaro.

Rey Melligen (132 ¼ lbs) of Bacolod City and Ruben Santillanosa (134 lbs) of Sultan Kudarat will fight in another eight rounder. Rey is the younger brother of welterweight Mark Jason Melligen. Santillanosa lost to reigning IBF world featherweight champion Billy Dib five years ago when they fought for the IBO Asia-Pacific title bout in Australia. The Clown Prince of the Ring Jun “Flash” Intor (125 ¾) of Mabinay, Negros Oriental is also set to appear in a four round bout against Crispin Parba (125 ¾) of Dumaguete City.

The four rounder between Cagayan de Oro natives Reymond Tabugon and Marben Layos will be the opening pro bout. Tabugon weighed 111 ½ lbs while Layos initially weighed 116 lbs and shed three pounds in his second attempt.

TODAY FILIPINO: AMONSOT FAILED TO WIN WBO ORIENTAL LIGHT WELTER TITLE

Former ALA boxer Czar Amonsot failed to win the WBO light welterweight title when he was held to a split draw by defending champion Solomon Egberime at the Melbourne Pavilion in Flemington, Australia Saturday night.

Amonsot dropped Egberime in round seven but that was apparently not enough to gain the win.

Judge Dale Westerman scored the fight a 113-113 draw, Andrew Campbell had Egberime ahead 114-113 while Aneeka Williams had Amonsot the winner by a similar 114-113 margin.

Both Amonsot and Egberime who is originally from Nigeria but now fights out of Australia both entered the ring after almost a one year absence.

Amonsot’s last bout was when he won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific lightweight title with a 2nd round knockout of Thailand’s Sirichai Ekchumpol on September 23, 2010 after the Thai was given a standing eight-count in the opening round.

Egberime for his part won the vacant WBO light welterweight title with a 9th round knockout of Indonesia’s Daudi Bahari on November 27,2010.

Several years ago on January 19, 2004 the Philippines Dondon Sultan also from the ALA Gym scored a 9th round knockout of Egberime who beat two other Filipinos on points – Junmar Dulog and Jun Paderna.

With the split draw the 26 year old southpaw Amonsot’s record moved to 22-3-2 with 12 knockouts while the 33 year old Egberime’s was listed as 21-3-1 with 11 knockouts.

DONAIRE TO FIGHT VAZQUEZ JR FOR WBO SUPER BANTAM TITLE

Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will fight former champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr for the WBO super bantamweight title relinquished by Mexican warrior Jorge “Travieso” Arce sometime in February next year.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum confirmed the title fight in a text message to the Manila Standard.

Donaire who was married in a spectacular church wedding to his wife Rachel last November 11 is coming off a lopsided, shutout defense of his WBC/WBO bantamweight title against undefeated two-division champion Omar Narvaez of Argentina at The Theater in Madison Square Garden last October 22.

Although Donaire tried his best, the smaller Narvaez who moved up in weight to take the fight refused to engage, making for a disappointing fight although HBO commentator and former pound for pound king Roy Jones Jr praised Donaire for his skill and style and blamed Narvaez for refusing to trade shots with Donaire.

Donaire, obviously having problems making the 118 pound limit announced that he was moving up to 122 pounds and Arum who had planned a fight against Arce and Japanese champion Toshiaki Nishioka next year said he had picked Vazquez since Arce was moving down to fight Indonesia’s Angy Angkota for the WBO bantamweight title vacated by Donaire..

The 27 year old Vazquez Jr won the vacant 122 pound title with a 4th round knockout of former WBO super flyweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona on February 27, 2010 in Puerto Rico but lost the crown to Arce in a sensational 12th round TKO on May 7 this year.

The 29 year old Donaire who the WBC/WBO bantamweight title with a spectacular 2nd round TKO of Mexican veteran Fernando Montiel with a cracking left hook that is regarded as probably the knockout of the year.

Arum had earlier planned to stage two fights for Donaire within the first six months of 2012 with Arce and Nishioka as opponents and booking a June 7 date for a possible title fight against either opponent at the spanking, new Mall of Asia coliseum which is still under construction.

Donaire and Vazquez are both skilled and exciting fighters and the title clash should draw a huge following although there is no indication as yet where it will be held.

Donaire is currently in the top 5 of the Ring Magazine pound for pound rankings behind countryman Manny Pacquiao with Floyd Mayweather Jr at No. 2.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer says Rey “Boom Boom’ Bautista must first overcome undefeated Mexican power puncher Angel Mendoza (17-0-1, 17 KO’s) in their IBF International title fight at the Hoops Dome in Lapu Lapu City on December 10 before eyeing a world title fight against Australia’s Billy Dib.

The possibility of a title shot at Dib (33-1, 20 KO’s), the IBF featherweight champion came up after the champion defended his title for the first time with a smashing 1st round stoppage of No. 8 ranked contender Alberto Servidei (31-1-2, 7 KO’s) at the Homebush Sports Center in Sydney late Saturday.

IBF official and boxing writer Rey Wheatley raised the possibility in his story on the Dib title defense when he said “There are several contenders who are after a shot at Billy Dib’s IBF title including tough IBF No. 5 Filipino Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and respected IBF No. 11 Mikey Garcia of the US, who is the brother of Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire’s trainer and former world champion Robert Garcia.

Aldeguer revealed that “this was mentioned before but we’ll study options after this fight” against Mendoza. He said Bautista knows this is a crucial fight and has been training hard for what is expected to be an action-packed battle of knockout artists.

Dib started aggressively and controlled the tempo of the fight before he maneuvered Servidei into a neutral corner and hammered him with a barrage of punches before finishing him off with a vicious left to the ribs dropped the Italian who was counted out by referee Pete Podgorski of the US at 2:38 of the opening round.

But I don’t think that proves or disproves what the equation is between them. And Mayweather is not the same kind of fighter that Marquez is. And Pacquiao is not the same kind of fighter that Marquez is either. So it may be based on a false equation. And that’s boxing and how else are you going to measure it? I think that since it’s ‘What have you done lately?’ there’s likely to be more of a surge of more experts and fans who think Mayweather will win the fight. That’s understandable. KELAPA Gading, Jakarta—The Philippines limited Vietnam to four points in the first quarter on the way to a 107-53 victory Tuesday for its second straight lopsided basketball win in the 26th Southeast Asian Games.

Greg Slaughter, the 7-foot Ateneo center, fired 20 points and Bobby Ray Parks scattered 19 as the Filipinos had another virtual workout at the BritAma Arena.

The Nationals slug it out with the squad considered as their only threat, Thailand, at 11 a.m. (12 noon in Manila) Wednesday.

The Thais also had a 2-0 card after ripping Cambodia, the Philippines’ first foe, 85-62, earlier. Thailand’s first victory came at the expense of Vietnam, 85-54, Monday afternoon.

“I watched both games,” Philippine coach Norman Black said. “The Thais are bigger than Vietnam and Cambodia and they have three good players. I don’t know their names but I know their (jersey) numbers.

The women’s team also tries to stay undefeated Wednesday against Myanmar at 1 p.m.

The Filipinas pulled off a surprise right in their first outing by holding off defending champion Malaysia, 64-56, despite the absence of dengue-stricken center Cassy Tioseco.

“We have no idea how to play them (Burmese),” PH coach Haydee Ong said. “What we know is that this will be the first time that they will play in the SEA Games.”

Filipino Football: Brunei Beats Jr. Philippines Azkals

Beginning the tournament with hopes of reaching the semi finals of the football competition in the 26th Souteast Asian Games, the Junior Azkals instead finished bottom of the group after losing 2-1 to Brunei Tuesday night.

First Half

The Junior Azkals started the game the on a high note, fashioning more chances in a very open game. They took the lead when Joshua Beloya controlled a ball from Mark Hartmann to take it past his man and drive into the far corner of the net in the 9th minute. Brunei came back strongly, though, with Adi Said soon equalizing as they passed through the Azkals midfield with ease before Adi controlled well and shot past PHL keeper Roland Müller to bring the scores level in the 18th minute.

The Junior Azkals dominated much of the first half but just couldn’t find the back of the net. Brunei’s goalkeeper made a fantastic save from Joshua Beloya who beat his defender and shot from just over six yards out but the keeper kept a strong hand to deflect it away from the goal. Next, OJ Clarino, who had several chances blocked beforehand, found himself free at the back post and took Beloya’s cross well. His shot looked goalbound until a defender slid in to deflect the ball for a corner.

Clarino had another chance from the corner which was floated in, the keeper touching it away into the path of the University of Sto. Tomas forward whose lofted shot went just past the post. Despite having the majority of shots and possessions, the Azkals then went behind against the run of play though.

Brunei had a goal disallowed for offside before going ahead. They scored when an innocuous free-kick was spilled by Roland Müller into the path of Reduan to tap in the rebound on the 42nd minute. The Philippines’ man of the match in the game against Vietnam, Müller has made mistakes in two consecutive games.

Brunei’s second goal also means the Junior Azkals have conceded at least two goals in every game at the SEA Games, showing their defensive problems and the root of their struggles. Individually the players have shown quality but not yet together as a team. Not creating another solid chance before the break the team went into half-time 2-1 down.

Second Half

Both teams passed the ball around well in the second half but couldn’t fashion a clear cut chance. Jeffrey Christiaens subbed for OJ Clarino and brought some life back into the team. Driving forward soon after his introduction, he struck the crossbar as he picked the ball up on the right wing, cut inside and unleashed a rocket which left the bar shaking.

After that shot Brunei threatened on the counter and Adi Said raced to catch a long ball with Jason De Jong in chase. Roland Müller came out of his goal and cleared the danger but was inadvertently hit by his defender and stayed down for a short time. Brave goalkeeping, the ball was then sent upfield and the Junior Azkals again created a chance, Christiaens touching the ball down eloquently for Joshua Beloya to shoot, but he was again blocked by the Brunei defense.

The future of the U23s

Despite the poor performance in the SEA Games, there are still some encouraging signs. Many players, including OJ Clarino, Porteria, Beloya and Christiaens showed some great individual skill and will all be available for the next SEA Games.

With the right preparation the team can build on this experience and reach its true potential by battling for Semi Final qualification in two years. -

Hackers: Target 'Twilight' Fans

Hackers are targeting fans of the popular “Twilight" movie series, poisoning links in Twilight-related searches with malware.

Security firm Norton said some infected results include “Nude pictures of Taylor Lautner," “Robert and Kristin kissing" and “Twilight true love."

"Clicking on some of the links resulting from these searches might get your PC, tablet or smartphone infected with viruses or keyloggers, so be extra careful when searching for Twilight-related material," tech site Mashable said.

The next movie in the “Twilight" series, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part 1)," is expected to open November 18, Mashable noted.

It added Norton’s experts expect to see even more Twilight-related malware, scams and spam as the excitement around the movie grows.

Mashable pointed out “Twilight Saga" fans are a common target for malicious hackers.

Last April, it noted a “Twilight" game scam spread virally on Facebook, and similar scams have accompanied every movie in the series.

A separate article on PRNewsWire.com said Norton experts shared tips on how users can protect themselves:

Stay away from sensational strangers: Cybercriminals use sensational wording to get you to click on their poisoned links.

Don’t leave your neck exposed: Get reputable online security software that will identify malicious links and protect against other unseen threats.

Watch out for (were)wolves in sheep’s clothing: check search term results to make sure sites aren’t poisoned before clicking on them. —

Bob Arum: PPV on Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 "Home run"

HOLLYWOOD—It wasn’t much of a smashing victory but, financially, Manny Pacquiao may have just hit one out of the ballpark.

His bout against Juan Manuel Marquez, which failed to decisively conclude their rivalry after a debate-spiked majority decision, is on track to break his record as far as pay-per-view (PPV) buys is concerned, Top Rank chief Bob Arum said Monday.

“We’re looking at a home run,” said Arum.

That should be a boost for Pacquiao, who faced questions after he was awarded victory in his defense of his WBO welterweight belt against Marquez.

It validates, at the very least, Pacquiao’s drawing power in the sport.

Pacquiao’s previous PPV high was 1.3 million subscriptions when he fought Shane Mosley last May.

“We’re looking way, way higher than 1.3 [million],” said Arum.

Arum and Pacquiao faced scrutiny after several journalists—and the crowd at MGM Grand—lashed out at the decision, saying that Marquez did enough to win the fight.

Judge Glenn Townbridge saw it 116-112 for Pacquiao. Dave Moretti had it 115-113 for the fighting congressman from the Sarangani province while Robert Hoyle had it even, 114-114.

“The decision was fair,” said Arum. “Look at the replay and you’ll see it’s fair. The worst score for Manny was 7-5 (rounds). The fairest was 8-4.”

Pacquiao had the same reply to criticisms: “Watch the replay. It’s clear I won.”

Arum said Pacquiao was a victim of expectations, and his failure to knock Marquez out was what created the perception of his defeat. Some notable experts also rushed to the defense of Pacquiao, including trainer Emanuel Steward, who said Marquez did not do enough to steal the crown.

“People were expecting Manny to mop the ring with Marquez,” said Arum, who had, even before the match, declared the 10-1 odds favoring Pacquiao as “ridiculous.”

The result triggered snowballing calls for a fourth installment of their rivalry, nipping the momentum that was building up slowly for a Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. megabout next year.

Golden Boy Promotions and Team Mayweather blasted Arum’s intent to pursue a fourth fight with Marquez, saying the undefeated American is all set to do battle with Pacquiao in May next year.

“We have been informed that Bob Arum is not interested in pursuing a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao at this time,” Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.

“I am sick and tired of Bob Arum twisting the truth. It’s another case of ‘Yesterday I was lying, today I’m telling the truth.’

“The truth of the matter is that we received this afternoon an e-mail from retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein, who informed us that Top Rank is pursuing a rematch with Marquez and, therefore, is not interested in … talks for a possible Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.”

“This is obviously as clear as it can be that they have no intentions of making a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight,” added Schaefer in the ESPN interview. “Therefore, Floyd Mayweather will have no other choice than to move on and identify and lock in another opponent for his ring return on May 5.”

But there are no plans yet for Pacquiao’s immediate future.

“We’ll know within the next two weeks what the plans are,” Arum said.

Former Pres. Arroyo spends night in hospital

Following Tuesday night's tumultuous scene where authorities at the airport blocked her from going abroad, former President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo spent a relatively quiet Tuesday night at a hospital near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Arroyo stayed at the St. Luke's Medical Center, which radio dzBB's Rodil Vega reported is less than 30 minutes away from NAIA.

At the SLMC, media crews waited for word on Arroyo's condition.

The dzBB report said some of Arroyo's allies were still angry over immigration authorities at the NAIA blocking Arroyo's flight abroad.

Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo reiterated the Arroyo camp's challenge to the Department of Justice to file formal charges against Arroyo.

Pelayo said blocking a person from leaving for abroad had in effect stripped her of her constitutional right to travel.

Arroyo's camp is planning to file contempt charges against the government for defying a Supreme Court temporary restraining order against the DOJ watch-list order. The TRO would have allowed Arroyo to go abroad.

In Malacañang, however, presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda raised questions about Arroyo's bid to fly out of the country.

On his Twitter account, he claimed Arroyo arrived barely 30 minutes before her scheduled flight, when the standard procedure is at least two hours before.

"The flight was 8:50 p.m., they arrived at the airport at 8:20 or so. They knew very well you're supposed to check in one or two hours before!" Lacierda said. —

Marquez Forcing Pacquiao to fight in Mexico for one last time.

MANILA, Philippines - Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez believes he has the leverage in negotiations for a potential fourth fight against his rival, Filipino boxer Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.

Marquez lost to Pacquiao in their trilogy bout last Saturday in Las Vegas, with the Filipino icon taking home a controversial majority decision victory.

Their two other fights also had controversial results, with their first meeting in 2004 ending in a draw while their 2008 rematch resulting in a split decision win for Pacquiao.

Marquez stormed out of the ring after the decision was announced and later said that he was once again robbed of the victory. Pacquiao, for his part, said immediately that he was willing to give Marquez another fight.

Pacquiao's promoter, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, said last Tuesday that they are already pursuing a fourth fight.

Marquez was quoted by Boxing Scene as saying, "Now the ball is in my court," regarding the negotiations for a fourth fight.

The contract for Pacquiao-Marquez III included a rematch clause in case Marquez pulled off the upset, where he will be guaranteed $10-million for the fourth installment. Marquez was guaranteed $5-million in the trilogy bout.

"I think the fourth fight should be in Mexico, under my conditions," Marquez said.

Marquez's trainer, Nacho Beristain, has said that they may pursue legal action against the judges in the fight, who scored the bout 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112 for Pacquiao.

Arum has not yet responded to Marquez's comments regarding the fourth fight.

Laurente stops Ghanaian in undercard!

MANILA, Philippines - Welterweight Dennis Laurente accomplished in the supporting cards, what boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao failed to inflict on bitter Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez in the main bout, knocking out Ghanaian Ayi Bruce last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas (yesterday morning in Manila).

Pounding on his opponent with combinations to the head and body all night, Laurente delivered the coup de grace in the penultimate stanza of their eight-round encounter, a devastating straight left that hit Bruce on the chin and dropped him for good.

Referee Robert Bryce counted out the dazed Ghanaian and declared the Palombon, Leyte pride winner by KO at 57 seconds in the seventh .

Prior to the stoppage, the 34-year-old Laurente was winning on all judges’ scorecards, 59-55, 60-54, 60-54, reported boxing website Philboxing.com.

Laurente, who had Pacquiao’s friend and assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez and Nonoy Neri in his corner, picked up his 41st overall victory and 22nd by KO against four losses and five draws.

Nicknamed “Bruce Lee,” Ghana’s Bruce suffered his second straight TKO setback for a 20-5 slate overall.

Laurente’s win made it two-for-two for Filipinos leading up to Pacquiao’s third showdown with Marquez that ended with the Pacman winning via split decision.

Fernando Lumacad of General Santos City opened the night with a unanimous decision over American Joseph Rios in a non-televised support fight.

According to Fightnews.com, Lumacad and Rios engaged in a closely contested battle but the Filipino boxer sent the American down twice, one in the second and another in the fifth, to eventually earn the nod of all three judges, 77-73, 77-74, and 78-72.

Lumacad improved to 25-3-3 while Rios dropped to 10-6-2.

Manny's worst cut ever, says Jinkee

LAS VEGAS – For over 45 minutes, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao was closeted in a private room with plastic surgeon Dr. Jerry Roth shortly after he beat Juan Manuel Marquez on a majority 12-round decision at the MGM Grand Garden Arena here Saturday night (yesterday morning, Manila).

The room was in his dressing quarters and closed to media. Pacquiao’s wife Jinkee, Dr. Vicki Belo and cutman Miguel Diaz were among those who watched Dr. Roth patch up a gaping wound above his right eye.

The cut was opened by a headbutt in the late rounds, according to Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach. Pacquiao said if he suffered the cut earlier, it could’ve changed the complexion of the fight because of the severe handicap.

Jinkee said from what she could recall, it was the worst cut ever inflicted on the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound champion. The cut took 28 stitches to sew up – eight in the inner layer, eight in the middle layer and 12 in the outer layer.

The procedure took about 30 minutes but Pacquiao was in the room longer because Dr. Roth cleaned it up before the stitching. Diaz said during the fight, the wound wasn’t sanitized and he only stopped the bleeding on a temporary basis. Dr. Roth made sure the wound was sanitized before treating it.

“Dr. Roth is one of the most prominent plastic surgeons in Las Vegas,” said a source. “He stitched up Manny on three layers of skin so in the future, if ever Manny gets hit in the same spot again, it won’t reopen. Dr. Roth did a thorough job of stitching it up. The cut was very deep, about an inch long.”

Pacquiao emerged from the room wearing a white bandage over the cut. He also had a cut on the inner side of his lower lip but Dr. Roth decided not to sew it up.

“It depends on how Manny feels the next day,” said the source. “If Manny is uncomfortable with it, Dr. Roth will sew it up. If not, the wound will heal by itself.”

CEBU’s boxing personalities were split on their opinion of Manny Pacquiao’s close majority decision win over archenemy Juan Manuel Marquez yesterday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer, who saw the action live in Las Vegas, felt that the third encounter was too close to call like the first two meetings between two of the best pugilists of their era. He, however, was convinced that the judges’ decision was fair.

“It was a close fight from where I sat at the MGM. It could go either way. Marquez threw clean shots but Pacquiao was the aggressor and threw more combinations. Marquez just waited to counter. It was Manny that took the fight to Marquez and being the champion, he deserves the win. In boxing, if you are the challenger, you have to be the aggressor. To me it was a close fight. If you put the marbles together, Manny deserved the win. It was the noisiest boxing crowd I’ve ever watched, more than (Floyd) Mayweather vs. (Oscar) de la Hoya. The atmosphere was tremendous,” the Cebuano promoter told Sun.Star Cebu.

Renowned ALA Gym trainers, the Villamor brothers, Edito and Edmund, were convinced that Pacquiao deserved the victory because he was more aggressive and threw more punches, while Marquez, who landed the clearer blows, was satisfied with counterpunching.

“Pacquiao won in a very close fight. Marquez was waiting all the time. I think the judges saw it for Pacquiao because he was throwing more punches, while Marquez was just contented in landing single shots,” said Edito, who watched the fight live with the marquee boxers of ALA Promotions at the Radisson Blu Hotel.

“Manny clearly won it. In the first 10 rounds, it was even but Manny got the 11th and 12th rounds because he was more aggressive. Marquez’s style was ugly. Manny should face Mayweather next because that is the fight that the people want,” said Edmund.

World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes, world-rated AJ Banal and undefeated Genesis Servania also believe that Pacquiao clearly won the fight and should face Mayweather Jr. next.

“Pacquiao won that fight. The decision of the judges was okay. If I were Pacquiao, I won’t give Marquez a rematch. Marquez kept on running. Pacquiao should face Mayweather,” said Nietes.

“I believe Manny won that fight. Marquez was just counterpunching unlike their previous fights, wherein he was aggressive. He just countered and didn’t follow it up.

There shouldn’t be a rematch and Manny should face Mayweather,” said Banal.

“For me Pacquiao really won the fight. Marquez always ran and made it boring. I believe there shouldn’t be a rematch,” said Servania.

On the other hand, highly-ranked flyweight Milan Melindo and retired former ALA star Z Gorres thought that Marquez did enough to deserve a close victory over the pound-for-pound No.1 in the world, while former world title challenger Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista saw the mega fight even.

“It was hard to decide. If you based it on aggressiveness, Pacquiao won because he was more aggressive. However, people didn’t see that Marquez was landing the clearer shots. For me, I think Marquez won,” Melindo said.

“I think Marquez won but it was a very close fight. There should be a rematch so that there would be closure on who really won,” said Gorres.

“I’m confused. Marquez had the solid punches. I think it was a draw. It was too close to call. I think there should be a rematch,” said Bautista.

MANILA, Philippines—Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao mustered enough strength to edge Juan Manuel Marquez anew and retain the WBO Welterweight crown via majority decision Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

One judge had it even at 114 while the other judges scored it for Pacquiao 115-113 and 116-112 for another controversial ending.

Pacquiao and Marquez picked up where they left off four years ago as the two engaged in a pulsating duel from start to finish. It was a narrow escape for the Filipino congressman, who took as much punishment as he got over 12 rounds.

The third fight between the two was as close as the previous two, and by the time they finished 12 rounds, the outcome was still in doubt. Pacquiao won some rounds with sheer aggression, while his Mexican opponent won others with brilliant counterpunching, keeping Pacquiao from getting inside.

Marquez, who claims he won the last two meetings, looked determined to back up his case as he set the tone and consistently landed right-hand punches that troubled Pacquiao all throughout the fight.

In stark contrast to their previous encounters, Pacquiao failed to knock down Marquez and this time it was the eight-division champion who would rally.

Pacquiao, who hiked his record to 54 wins, 38 of which by knockouts, against three losses with two draws, gained momentum in the latter rounds as he was able to hit Marquez with combinations that seemed to have gotten the judges’ nod.

It was a tentative Pacquiao who showed up in the early rounds with Marquez able to keep him at bay with his effective counter-punching.

Marquez was a heavy underdog coming in but defied the odds once again and pushed Pacquiao to the limit.

In the eighth and ninth rounds, both fighters exchanged flurries in a too-close-to-call moment that could’ve gone either way.

Pacquiao was in his usual relentless form but Marquez didn’t budge and held his guard.

The first match in 2004 saw Marquez rally from three knockdowns in the first round to forge a controversial draw.

In the second meeting, Pacquiao chalked up a narrow split decision in 2008 highlighted by a third-round knockdown of Marquez.

The poundage is the same. The composition is different. The debate is just beginning.

Juan Manuel Marquez scaled 142 pounds in front of a capacity crowd of more than 5,000 fans at Friday’s weigh-in at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, the exact same number he hit for his disappointing defeat to Floyd Mayweather two years ago. But for that weigh-in, the words of Paul Simon echoed in our heads: “Why am I so soft in the middle now?” For Saturday’s bout with Manny Pacquiao, Marquez is not a soft 142. He’s a more muscular 142, thick up and down his torso.

Unquestionably, the lightweight champion found a better way to bulk up. But the question remains: Should he have bulked up at all?

Pacquiao weighed 143 pounds (his lightest weight in five fights), thinner above the waist than Marquez but with thighs and calves as well-suited for the Preakness as for the prize ring. Officially, the two fighters are separated by just a pound. And neither man is likely to rehydrate and blow up to a markedly different weight overnight. There is no real size difference between Pacquiao and Marquez.

There are many, however, who believe Marquez would have been better off allowing there to be a size difference. His best work in recent years has been done at 135 pounds or below. Added bulk might give Marquez’s punches added impact, and it might allow him to absorb Pacquiao’s power better. But it also might hamper his speed, his elusiveness, his agility. Marquez could have conceded weight in order to ensure that he would be able to make Pacquiao miss and then counterpunch quickly. Maybe he’ll be as quick as ever on Saturday night, having added weight “the right way.” If not, his decision to try to go pound for pound against the pound-for-pound king will be debated long after the final punch is thrown.

One thing is beyond debate: The crowd is behind Pacquiao. Throughout the undercard weigh-in, fans chanted “Man-ny! Man-ny!” and held up Filipino flags and homemade posters, most of them decorated with a certain chomping yellow video game character. The boos drowned out the cheers when Marquez was introduced; the reverse was true a moment later when Pacquiao stepped through the black curtain. And Pacquiao appeared genuinely humbled and touched by the show of support, a “this never gets old” look spreading across his face.

HBO broadcast the weigh-in live (a first), and commentator Max Kellerman asked Pacquiao as they stood on the stage what he liked most about the experience. “I like the fans screaming,” Pacquiao replied.

Look for the screams to get even louder the next time Pacquiao and Marquez go face to face.

With regard to the pay-per-view undercard, five of the six fighters weighed in without incident. Juan Carlos Burgos tipped the scales at 129 pounds, Luis Cruz at 130. Mike Alvarado and Breidis Prescott were each 140 pounds. And Timothy Bradley and his mind-boggling abdominal muscles were on the junior welterweight limit of 140. But Bradley’s opponent, Joel Casamayor, stripped all the way down and still came in one pound over. So it was off to the sauna to try to sweat off another 16 ounces, which he did successfully, balancing the beam at 140 about one hour later.

MANILA, Philippines—Two Filipino lensmen have topped the 2011 photo contest sponsored by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Department of Foreign Affairs announced Thursday.

The DFA said Reynaldo C. Mondez and Romeo B. Doneza placed first and second in the competition with their entries titled “Solar Energy Panels” and “World Wide,” respectively.

Third prize went to Wong Chi-keung of Hong Kong for his entry “No Boundary Network.”

The DFA said in a press statement that Mondez and Doneza’s photos “stood out among the 204 submitted by 95 photographers from 17 Apec member-countries to best reflect Apec’s priorities of strengthening regional economic integration, advancing regulatory cooperation and promoting green growth.”

For receiving over 4,600 online votes, Mondez also bagged the Apec photo contest’s “Popular Choice Award.”

Mondez is a retired photographer of the National Housing Authority. He currently runs a small wedding photography business with his son in Metro Manila.

Two other Filipino photographers—Ellen de Leon and Robert Anton Pimentel— made it to the top 10 finalists with their entries “Winds of Change” and “Economic Harmony,” respectively.

Their pictures “stood out, based on the criteria for judging, which included the quality of the photograph, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit, as well as how it represents the three Apec themes.”

The contest judges were Eric Baradat, Agence France-Presse photo editor-in-chief-worldwide; Mladen Antonov, AFP photo editor-in-chief-North America; Getty Images photographer Palani Mohan; Apec Secretariat executive director Mohamad Noor; and US-Apec senior official Kurt Tong.

In a news release, the Apec secretariat quoted Mondez as saying he was “very happy and truly humbled by this experience.”

He had called his winning photo of children playing basketball next to a hut and a solar energy panel a “symbol of hope for a sustainable future, even in the most remote parts of the Philippines.”

Monde’s photo was taken in a “rural village in Rizal province.”

“What I am trying to convey to the world is to make renewable energy more accessible to everyone by first lowering the cost of technology. Through my photo, I hope to reach out to the decision-makers who are involved in renewable energy,” he added.

Pinoy math whiz kids Congratulated by Palace

Malacañang on Monday congratulated the country’s delegates to the 2011 World Mathematics Team Championship (WMTC) held in Beijing, China.

In a press statement, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said, “We extend our congratulations to our Pinoy math whiz kids and Miss Philippines for once again proving that we Filipinos are capable of competing against the best and the brightest on the world stage."

Lacierda said Farrel Eldrian Wu, a Grade 6 student from Taguig, won a gold medal and ranked first in the primary division individual contests of the Mathematics Competition.

Farrel was part of "Philippines Team 1" along with other elementary school students Clyde Wesley Ang, Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa, Andrea Jaba, Sedrick Scott Keh and John Aries Ceazar Hingan.

The group placed second over-all in the team contest.

World math contest

The WMTC was a four-day event held from November 2 to November 6 in Beijing.

The competition had three divisions:
Primary School Level (For participants born in November 2, 1999 or later)
Junior High School Level (For participants born in November 2, 1996 or later)
Senior High School Level (For participants born in November 2, 1993 or later)

The teams were ranked by total scores and each of the top six scoring team members received a medal and a certificate.

For the individual awards, in each division, the top 10% scorers received gold medals, the next 20% received silver medals, while the next 70% scorers received bronze medals.

Pinay sought in alleged $1.5M investment scam in Canada

TORONTO, Canada - Authorities are seeking a Filipina, who allegedly took money from fellow Filipinos in a fake investment scam.
Rowena Villanueva, a woman who claimed to work in a physiotherapy clinic in Scarborough, Ontario, is being accused of swindling many Filipinos here.

Villanueva allegedly asked Filipinos to become co-investors in a physiotherapy clinic she was building. However, the plans to build a clinic did not push through, and the "investors" said their money was not returned.

Abbygail Pascual is one of the alleged victims and claims to have been sweet-talked by Villanueva. She lost $90,000 in the scam.

“She drew up a contract and then we signed it. (Later), phone calls weren’t being returned, text messages weren’t being returned that’s when I pretty much realized that she might not give me back my money,” said Pascual.

Villanueva’s scheme was reported in the Toronto Star, a few weeks after another report on a Filipina dry cleaner who is suspected of running an immigration scam.

Toronto Star reporter Dale Brazao said alleged victims of the physiotherapy clinic scam approached the newspaper to ask for help.

“(Villanueva) was supposedly offering incredible rates of interest of 7 to 10% a month, when the banks are offering 2% a year,” said Brazao.

“Once I began investigating, I realized the whole thing is a fraud. There was no clinic, there were no doctors. This is a paper fraud,” he added.

Soon after the story broke, more alleged victims of Villanueva came out.

In a recent meeting of alleged victims, there were estimates Villanueva might have embezzled close to $1.5 million. She is now being sought by police.

Several victims have sought police assistance but were told by the authorities that no arrests could be made at this time since this is a civil case.

Tau Gamma Phi Donates Blood in Saudi Arabia

SAUDI ARABIA – The Tau Gamma Phi International in the Western Region of Saudi held a blood-letting activity as part of the fraternity’s 43rd anniversary.
“We are doing this because we believe we could save lives and to give glory and honor to our fraternity, Tau Gamma Phi," said Ferdie Tapa, president Tau Gamma Phi International Asir Western Region.

The activity was not only exclusive to fraternity members, as other Filipinos based in Saudi also took time out to donate blood.

Pinay nurse Rachel Grace Parfan was excited to donate blood while X-ray technician Doreen Advincula saw the activity as an opportunity that would help others in the future.

“I am thankful to all our members, our brothers and sisters, for their unselfish support for this charity project. I hope the Saudi government will support us also in our next blood letting program,” Tapa added.

President Benigno Aquino III leaves for Hawaii today (Friday) to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) leader’s summit.

The President will be accompanied by a lean delegation that includes Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario, Transportation and Communication Secretary Mar Roxas, Trade and Industry Secretary Gregory Domingo, Energy Secretary Rene Almendras and presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda.

Lacierda told a news conference that Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, who is in the United States, will join the presidential party in Honolulu.

He said Mr. Aquino will leave at 4 p.m. and will return in the early morning of Nov. 15—in time for the visit of US State Secretary Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Aquino and Clinton will meet on Nov. 16, the same day the President will leave for Bali, Indonesia, for the 19th Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit.

In Hawaii, the President will meet with 20 other Apec heads of states to discuss growth and jobs, regulatory reforms and competitiveness as well as energy efficiency and security.

Mr. Aquino will attend the Apec chief executive officer summit Nov. 11-12 and then participate in the Apec Business Advisory Council (Abac) Dialogue with Leaders. He will also meet with the Filipino community there.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Thursday the Philippine delegation will support “green growth,” regulatory reforms and continued trade expansion in the Apec meeting.

DFA spokesperson Raul Hernandez however said that the Philippines “wants flexibility on implementing tariff reduction on environmental goods.” Manila also “supports regulatory reforms to improve internal processes and procedures,” he noted.

In the business dialogue, Hernandez said that members will have the “opportunity to meet with Apec leaders to discuss the year’s Abac work program and raise issues of pressing concern to the business community.”

Abac-Philippines is represented by Tony Tan Caktiong, chair and CEO of Jollibee Foods Corp.; Doris Magsaysay-Ho, president and CEO of A. Magsaysay Inc.; and Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Ayala Corp. chair and CEO.

This year, Abac adopted the theme “21 Economies for the 21st Century” with the sub-theme “Employing People and ideas for sustained growth in the Asia-Pacific.”

The theme “reflects the Abac 2011 objectives of helping Apec achieve progress in regional economic integration, small- and medium-scale enterprises, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development,” according to the DFA.

Apec also groups China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Peru, South Korea, Russia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Hong Kong, among others.

Group welcomes DFA decision on 41 countries

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs' (DFA) decision to withdraw the certification for 41 "OFW-unfriendly" countries was welcomed by the president of the Blas F. Ople Policy Center.

“This paves the way for a stress-free Christmas for our overseas workers who live and work in any of these 41 countries," said Susan Ople, president of the center.
Ople earlier said that many OFWs working in countries certified by the DFA as noncomplaint were worried about the deployment ban. The DFA certification for 41 noncompliant countries had served as the basis for the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration's (POEA) issuance of a deployment ban in those countries.

Ople has received several emails and Facebook messages from OFWs inquiring about the ban. She cited a casino worker in Cambodia, who was worried about the ban because he had already made plans with his wife to spend Christmas in the Philippines. Cambodia was among the countries included in the POEA deployment ban.

The former labor undersecretary urged the DFA, POEA, legislators and different stakeholders to use the deferment period to sit down and thresh out possible solutions to the rampant abuse and maltreatment of Filipino workers, particularly household service workers abroad. It also called for a review of earlier lists that contained countries with OFW-friendly policies.

Likewise, Ople urged the DFA to direct its foreign posts to consult Filipino workers' groups in their countries of jurisdiction when revisiting these certifications.

“This gives us a temporary reprieve but does not really solve the problem regarding how this law should be implemented. We urge the DFA and the POEA to use this period to hold more consultations with various stakeholders as well as with legislators,” said Ople.

Hillary Clinton to visit Thailand, Philippines

WASHINGTON—Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will visit U.S. treaty allies Thailand and the Philippines before attending the annual East Asia summit in Indonesia this month.

The State Department said Wednesday the visits underscore U.S. efforts to strengthen key alliances in the region.

Clinton will first attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Hawaii and hold bilateral meetings with a number of foreign ministers. President Barack Obama will also attend APEC.

After APEC, Clinton will visit Manila on Tuesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty. The next day she goes to Bangkok, where Thai authorities are battling severe floods.

Clinton then travels to Bali, attending the East Asia summit with Obama.

San Beda’s Red Lions and Red Cubs extolled for NCAA triumphs

MANILA, Philippines—Freego Jeans president Nelson Chan extolled San Beda College for winning the NCAA men’s basketball championship for the second straight year and the juniors plum for the third straight season.

“It’s another great year for the San Beda squads and another proud year for the San Beda community and its legion of supporters, including us in Freego,” said Chan, an alumnus of the Mendiola-based school.

“Just as we (in Freego) try to excel in our own trade, the Red Lions and the Red Cubs are likewise doing their utmost best to excel inside the basketball court. We salute them (Red Lions and Red Cubs) for their courageous effort to live up to their school’s creed,” added Chan.

The Red Lions swept the San Sebastian Stags in their recent best-of-three championship to win their fifth NCAA crown in the last six years—allowing them to tie Letran as the winningest school in the 87-year history of the league with 16 titles each.

The Red Cubs, on the other hand, beat the CSB-La Salle Greenhills in their title series which they capped with a 69-61 win. With their 19th juniors crown, the Red Cubs became the league’s winningest squad.

Aside from business tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan, Freego is one of the active supporters of the San Beda men’s basketball team as the main supplier of its playing uniforms and other apparels.

Chan hopes the strong partnership between Freego and San Beda management will last a lifetime, believing the Red Lions have what it takes to build another dynasty in the NCAA.

For years, Freego has supported the Adamson men’s basketball squad, the Philippine wushu team, and the Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball League.

San Beda’s Garvo Lanete, Sudan Daniel, Melo Lim, and Anjo Caram and Adamson’s Lester Alvarez, Rodney Brondial, Roider Cabrera, and Jeffrey Olalia appeared during Freego’s Ultimate Denim Show in Philippine Fashion Week held recently at SM Mall of Asia.

Identical twins Alex and Alvin Generalo, Dany Funelas and Norwell Cajes test their mettle against the region’s best in Cipule Lake on Friday.

Dr. Jay Adalem, head of the Philippine secretariat in West Java, said the Filipino athletes in West Java are ready and able to deliver.

Adalem was tasked to keep close watch on the training and progress of canoe-kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, golf, paragliding, rowing and traditional boat – also known as dragon boat- rowing.

The Generalos compete in the men’s 1,000-meter kayak doubles while Alex will figure in the men’s 1,000 singles. Funelas is scheduled to be in the men’s 1000 canoe competitions and tandem with Cajes for the doubles.

Canoe-kayak head coach Len Escollante disclosed that team managers and coaches during their meeting Wednesday night decided to cancel Thursday’s heats and proceed directly to the finals on Friday.

Escollante explained that the course was wide enough to accommodate all of the entries at one time.

The Filipino rowers headed by two-time singles sculls SEA Games gold medalist Benjie Tolentino arrived in West Java Wednesday night.

“We’ve had to redouble our efforts to raise the standard of our rowers because they were not up to the standard that I wanted them when I took over coaching them in April," Kazlauskas, 41, a former World Cup finalist, said.

Cycling, delisted in Laos in 2009, returns this year with six additional events including the team track sprint, 4,000 pursuit (Omium), women team sprint (Omium) and the dreaded mountain bike downhill for women and could be another source of gold medals, Adalem said.

Veteran Lloyd Lucien Reynante and 2009 Tour champ Mark Galedo are among the favorites in the road competitions starting Sunday.

Filipino fencing artists, consistent SEA Games contributors, are also keen to equal their three golds haul thee 2007 Thailand SEA Games, although fencing head Toto Africa believes this is no easy task.

“Teams like Indonesia and Vietnam have vastly improved and we can only hope that our training, despite limited funds, will be enough to match their efforts," said Africa.

According to Adalem, paragliding, which has 12 golds at stake, is making its SEA Games debut. He opted out of forecasting the nationals’ chances in paragliding noting that Filipinos are new to the sport.

Adalem added that the dragon boat rowers, who have been in low profile mode while their former teammates got the spotlight to shine on them, are the country’s surprise package.

“Our national dragon boat rowers have been training very hard despite the distractions caused by their former teammates and I feel they may want to prove something in this SEA Games," Adalem said. —

Professionalism Prevails At Pacquiao-Marquez Press Conference

The last time a major pay-per-view boxing event invaded the Las Vegas Strip, the final formal press conference featured trash talk and name-calling, and by the weigh-in, one fighter even had his hand on the other’s throat. If you know anything at all about Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, you know you’ll never see that kind of behavior out of them.

Floyd Mayweather believes in marketing an event with prefight theatrics. Pacquiao and Marquez believe in letting the fight speak for itself. The fierce in-ring rivals simply have too much respect for each other outside the ring to do it any other way.

Everywhere you looked and listened during Wednesday’s presser at the MGM Grand’s Hollywood Theatre, respect was in the air.

“Both of you have comported yourselves the way real sportsmen should behave,” promoter Bob Arum told the combatants before welcoming them to the microphone. “There hasn’t been one bit of trash talk, there hasn’t been one bit of vulgarity.”

“I don’t like talking outside the ring. I do my job in the ring,” Marquez said in his ever-improving English.

“I’m praying that nobody fighting on Saturday night will get hurt,” Pacquiao noted. Then, in case anyone misinterpreted the remark, he added with a laugh: “Well, not badly hurt.”

A few minutes before the press conference began, I asked Pacquiao whether his rivalry with Marquez had developed any sort of a personal edge, particularly with Marquez publicly insisting that he deserved to win each of their first two bouts.

“Before this fight, he was wearing T-shirts saying ‘I Beat Manny Pacquiao Twice’ and ‘I Was Robbed,’ but I’m not angry to Marquez,” Pacquiao responded. “He has the freedom to do that. For me, inside my heart, he’s my friend. But in the ring, we have business to do.”

It’s this attitude that has endeared the Filipino icon to so many fans over the years, and to attempt a tough-guy act even remotely resembling that of Mayweather would cut deeply against what draws the masses to Pacquiao. He values professionalism over sensationalism. And the same is true of Marquez. Their shared attitude is, essentially, if you were stirred by their first two fights and believe this one will be comparably action-packed, you’ll tune in, and they’re not going to pretend to hate each other in order to convince you.

“It’s amazing to have a trilogy this dead-even through 24 rounds,” Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer said at the press conference, “and so exciting from the first round of the first fight through the last round of the last fight.”

That’s precisely why Pacquiao-Marquez III was made. The first two fights were both classics. And the men behind them are both class acts.

If you want a memorable press conference, look elsewhere. If you want a memorable boxing match, you’re in the right place.

How It Feels to Fight Manny Pacquiao

On June 28, 2008, I fought Manny Pacquiao. I fought as hard as I could and as well as I could, and as you probably know, it wasn’t nearly enough. Manny knocked me out in the ninth round.

I honestly believed that I had a good chance of winning the fight. Three months earlier, I watched Pacquiao win a very close, controversial decision over Juan Manuel Marquez, and while I’ll admit that I don’t have the skill as a technician that Marquez has, I saw that Marquez was able to hit Pacquiao and I believed I could do the same. It felt like it was all setting up to be an awesome fight for me.

Then the bell rang. I’ve honestly never fought anybody like that before in my life. I faced some pretty fast guys in the amateurs, like Zab Judah for example, but nobody with Pacquiao’s combination of speed and accuracy. Most fast fighters just throw a lot of punches without worrying about whether they all land; Manny isn’t like that. He hits you with one shot, and then the next shot is coming right behind it, and that one lands too. It’s just unbelievable.

And his defense was better than I expected too. He never stayed in one spot. I’d have to go chase him down all the time. I wanted to get him in the corner or get him on the ropes, but he was very elusive.

I would compare the experience of fighting Pacquiao to getting caught in a hail storm. You know how hail comes down really hard and fast? It won’t knock you out, but it’s annoying and it’s just hitting you all the time and there’s nothing you can do about it. That’s how I felt fighting Pacquiao. His punches aren’t necessarily hurting you, but you’re caught in a hail storm and you’re just like, “Man, where the hell is it coming from?” If I tried to keep my right hand up to block the left hand, then I left the other side open and he just kept finding ways to hit me.

Of course, he did knock me out, so I can’t claim that none of his punches were hard. As they say, the punch that knocks you out is always the one you don’t see coming. Well, I literally did not see that punch coming. I tried to get away from his jab and I turned my face, and when I came back — BOOM! I walked into his left hand. I definitely lost consciousness for a moment. I just remember being like, Whoa, what happened? I tried getting up, and the ref said, “No, no, stay there.” And I’m like, “All right, cool.”

Hey, there’s no shame for me in losing that fight. I was in there with a super-human force that night. Pacquiao was awesome, and I take my hat off to him.

Since the last time Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez fought each other, on March 15, 2008 as junior lightweights, Pacquiao has competed seven times and Marquez has entered the ring six times. Over the course of those fights, neither man has tipped the scales at the same weight twice. From the moment Pacquiao-Marquez III was contracted, weight has been a huge part of the discussion. Since their last fight against each other, both fighters have jumped up and down through the scales with varying degrees of success. What will this catchweight of 144 pounds mean for them?

Manny Pacquiao

Fight 1: David Diaz on June 28, 2008 at 134.5 pounds. KO 9.

Fight 2: Oscar De La Hoya on Dec. 6, 2008 at 142 pounds. KO 8.

Pacquiao jumped all the way from lightweight to fight De La Hoya, but he wasn’t really a welterweight yet—as evidenced by Pac-Man’s drop back to junior welter in his next fight to take the lineal championship from Hatton. Since then, Manny has held steady at about 144 pounds.

Fight 3: Ricky Hatton on May 2, 2009 at 138 pounds. KO 2.

Fight 4: Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14, 2009 at 144 pounds. KO 12.

Fight 5: Joshua Clottey on March 3, 2010 at 145.75 pounds. W 12.

Fight 6: Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13, 2010 at 144.5 pounds. W 12.

Even when he fought Margarito for a 154-pound trinket, at a catchweight of 150, Pacquiao weighed in the mid-140s. Size most definitely did not matter in this fight, as Pacquiao brutalized the bigger man and left him with a broken orbital bone.

Many point to the weight as the reason Marquez was so thoroughly dominated by Mayweather. But it had at least as much to do with the fact that Marquez was, for one of the very few times in his career, in the ring with someone much quicker and slicker than he was.

Fight 4:Juan Diaz on July 31, 2010 at 133.5 pounds. W 12.

Fight 5: Michael Katsidis on Nov. 27, 2010 at 134 pounds. KO 9.

The Katsidis fight marked Marquez’s third successful defense of the lineal lightweight championship he won from Casamayor. Whether the Mexican great will ever return to 135 pounds after Saturday’s showdown with Pacquiao remains to be seen.

Fight 6: Likar Ramos on July 16, 2011 at 138 pounds. KO 1.

Overall Analysis: The fighters have clearly taken different weight-related paths since their second fight, with Pacquiao putting together an unprecedented run of successes across numerous divisions (even if some of the titles came as a result of the usual boxing sanctioning-body machinations) and Marquez mostly competing as a lightweight. All of the evidence suggests Marquez is still at his best when he weighs about 135 pounds. So for him to succeed in this third bout with Pacquiao, his most intelligent move is probably to weigh in some 8-10 pounds below the 144-pound limit and aim to beat Pacquiao with his speed and skill rather than trying to match the pound-for-pound king literally pound for pound. HOLLYWOOD – It’s no secret that Evander Holyfield, the former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, is a Manny Pacquiao admirer.

In fact, he once said that whoever fights the Filipino superstar gets into trouble. And that includes Juan Manuel Marquez, who’s next in line for Pacquiao.

Holyfield, the five-time heavyweight champion, visited Pacquiao at his La Palazzo apartment Sunday, as the latter prepared for his trip to Las Vegas.

Pacquiao lent Holyfield an ear.

Pacquiao’s adviser, Mike Koncz, said Holyfield dropped by around noontime, and shared the table with Pacquiao as the curious gathered around them.

The visit did not last long, and what the two fighters talked about wasn’t immediately known.

But in a previous interview with www.8countnews.com, Holyfield warned Marquez of what to expect once the opening bell sounds next Saturday in Las Vegas.

“If you fight Manny Pacquiao, you better be ready. If you ain’t ready, you are in trouble. When that bell rings, he is coming. He is coming and he is going to throw a lot of punches at you.”

Holyfield said he likes Pacquiao because of his ways in and out of the ring.

“He is a great ambassador for the sport of boxing. The way in which he carries himself and how he treats his fans is what separates him from the rest.”

Holyfield’s unexpected visit came three days after Kobe Bryant, the NBA superstar, dropped by at the Wild Card Gym to watch Pacquiao train.

Over the past week, more than a couple of Hollywood stars came to see Pacquiao at the gym, including Mark Wahlberg, John Cho and Giovanni Ribisi.

There’s more of them to be seen on fight night.

Pacquiao spars for the last time at the famous Hollywood sweatshop Monday before taking the 300-mile trip to Vegas.

t’s fight week, and in a matter of days, the year’s biggest fight unfolds. It’s the third time Pacquiao and Marquez will square off, and there’s even the possibility of a fourth.

If Marquez wins and shocks the world, the fight contract calls for a rematch in six months.
But it’s far off the mind of the 38-year-old Marquez.

“First, third (fight), then fourth,” he said.
Pacquiao laughed it off.

“Fourth fight? Tingnan muna natin kung may ibubuga siya sa fight na ito (First, let’s see if he has something to show in this fight),” he said.

Pacquiao helps David Ravela regular sparmate to buy house

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino boxing champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao has a reputation of being a generous man outside of the boxing ring and his generosity extends to people even beyond his inner circle of family and friends.

One of Pacquiao's sparring partners, Mexican-American David Rodela, was a beneficiary of Pacquiao's generosity late last year, when the pound-for-pound king gave him a big wedding gift.

"He asked, David, I heard you just got married. I said yeah, and he said congratulations," Rodela said in the third episode of 24/7: Pacquiao vs Marquez.

"Then he asked, 'Hey, did you buy a house?' I said, 'Not yet,'" Rodela said.

Rodela said Pacquiao gave him a check, which was enough to pay for the down payment for his house.

"I was just happy, blown away. I'm just his sparring partner, I'm not family," Rodela said. "He didn't have to."

Rodela's new house features an autographed poster of Pacquiao with the words "Pacman, Ninong."

The boxer admits that his own career will never follow the trajectory of Pacquiao's, and understands that he will never be as financially successful as the Filipino fighter.

"I don't need to be rich. I'm making enough money just sparring. If I'm known as a sparring partner, that's fine. It doesn't bug me. As long as my family has a roof over their heads and food on the table, I'm happy, " he said.

Rodela has been sparring with Pacquiao for 13 training camps now, and he is more determined than ever to help Pacquiao prepare for his upcoming fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.

"I don't got money, I don't got nothing, what can I offer him? The only thing, the way I think I can help him, and offer my thank you, is to do the best that I possibly can to help him get ready for the fight," Rodela said.

Rodela's job in the camp is to duplicate Marquez' resilience and tenacity, and he said that he feels the Filipino fighter is all ready with one week to go before fight night.

"I think he's ready. Freddie (Roach) is giving him his last pointers, the last things he need to sharpen up," Rodela said.

As for his prediction, Rodela echoes Roach's words, saying, "It won't go past 6 rounds."

Philippines Football: Azkals Under 23s lose to Timor-Leste

JAKARTA, Indonesia - The Philippine under-23 football team came into their 2nd match with a positive attitude that it could bounce back against Timor Leste after dropping their opening match of the games, 3-1, versus gold medal contender and 2009 silver medalist Vietnam.

But Timor Leste seemed to have other things in mind as they came out the aggressors.

Timor Leste opened up the scoring early in the 16th minute with a strike to the back of the net by Murilo de Almeida, who scored 2 goals in their 2-1 win against Brunei.

The match seemed to be a little bit in control for Timor Leste but the under-23 Azkals did not give up.

Across to the left side of the goal to Patrick Hinrichsen gave him an opening to give a short pass in the box to the streaking OJ Portiera for the equalizer in the 37th minute. The match entered halftime 1-1 and it was still anybody's game.

But in the 2nd half, the Philippine side had an early defensive lapse in the midfield as a weak pass by captain Matt Hartman was intercepted and the Timor Leste side quickly countered.

It came out to a one-on-one with only Hinrichsen rushing back on defense against a streaking Diogo Rangel on the right flank.

Hinrechsen was a full step behind and could not deflect Rangel's ground shot to the far post that Philippines keeper Roland Mueller had no chance of saving. It put Timor Leste up, 2-1, in the 48th minute.

In the rest of the 2nd half, the under-23 Azkals seemed to get their rhythm back and penetrated the Timor Leste defense several times but their short crosses kept getting deflected out or saved by the Timor Leste keeper.

The match ended, 2-1, with an ecstatic Timor Leste side now getting 2 wins to open the tournament. Meanwhile, the Philippines dropped to 0-2, with a very slim chance of making the crossover semifinals.

Weiss apologetic

After the match, coach Hans Michael Weiss was apologetic to the Filipino fans who had high expectations for the team.

He quickly reminded the media though that this is a very young team and a lot of them will still qualify for the 2013 SEA Games.

Hence, Weiss felt it was unnecessary to put too much pressure on the young players, who cracked under the intense pressure especially in defense.

Weiss also noted that he kept reminding the boys to avoid the high balls as they don't have the material to play such a game without their more experienced players.

Weiss admitted it's unrealistic now to aim for the semifinals and he's going to look into the possibility of fielding in more of the local players as opposed to Filipino-foreigners who composed 10 out of the starting 11.

He said its about time for his wards to get more exposure to build on their confidence.

The Philippines' next match in the football competition is on November 11 against Laos at 4 p.m. Indonesia time.

Philippine Football: Jr Azkals suffer 2nd straight loss

The Philippine Under-23 Football team suffered their second consecutive setback in the 2011 South East Asian (SEA) Games in Jakarta, Indonesia with 1-2 loss against Timor Leste.

What was billed as a sure win for the Jr. Azkals turned into a shock victory for Timor Leste who seemed revitalized after several years of being dominated. Timor Leste came out with some great passing and ball movement to score twice and push themselves into contention for qualification from the group.

Timor Leste took the lead when Antonio Marcos Sousa crossed for Murilo de Almeida to tap in his third goal of the tournament. OJ Porteria equalized for the Philippines in the 37th minute following a string of passes between the Jr. Azkals before half-time. After the break Timor Leste quickly retook the lead as Diogo Rangel was played in behind the defensive line and he poked the ball through Müller’s legs. Support from the Philippine crowd never wavered but on the pitch the players just couldn’t find that second goal to record their first points of the tournament.

First half

The game started with a slow tempo but flashes of inspiration broke the methodical play. First a fine through ball found Mark Hartmann with space in the box and his shot was tipped over well by the keeper. Moments later Timor Leste countered and Sousa, who hit the woodwork twice in their last game against Brunei, found space on the right to cross in to Murilo de Almeida to tap in on the 17th minute and put Timor Leste ahead.

Both Sousa and Murilo were left unmarked and the shaky defense continued to upset the Philippines’ momentum and rhythm.

The Philippines eventually found their rhythm and began passing the ball around at the back. Building up the play they equalized, crossing from the left with OJ Porteria on hand to tap in at the far post. Though the buildup was patient and over twenty passes were made before Porteria scored, the goal will probably be remembered for the teenager’s celebration as he ran to Jason De Jong and the pair began a choreographed routine.

The goal seemed to give the Jr. Azkals the confidence needed to press the Timor Leste players and fight more for the ball, shifting momentum to the PHL side just before the break. Going into half-time with the scores level, though, was a far cry from the 5-0 victory the last time the two countries faced each other in 2010.

Second half

Timor Leste came out the brighter side and quickly retook the lead as they once more broke through the defensive line. Passing through the defense Rangel got through on the right and not properly challenged he went through to nutmeg Müller and put Timor Leste back in front in the 48th minute.

Timor Leste got behind the defensive line several times and threatened next from a corner, Roland Müller uncharacteristically flapping at the ball but was saved by Porteria who cleared the resulting header off the line.

Carli De Murga, who picked up another yellow card and will be suspended for the next game against Laos, had the best chance to equalize when he played a good one-two with Manny Ott to cut through Timor Leste’s defense. His first touch was quality and set himself up for the shot, though his strike was tame.

Timor Leste then countered and substitute Neckson Leonora, who came on for Matt Hartmann with Jason De Jong taking over the role of captain, gave away a free-kick with a rash challenge in the 75th minute. Crossed in from the left, Timor Leste headed onto the bar from point blank range, just inches away from making sure of the win.

The Jr. Azkals pressed the game from then on, Timor Leste looking to cling on for the win. Last year’s UAAP forward of the year Jinggoy Valmayor forced Emerson into a good save from 25 yards out. Yet despite dominating the final twenty minutes they couldn’t quite find the back of the net and Timor Leste held on to record their second 2-1 victory of the tournament.

In context

Timor Leste’s senior team is ranked 201st in the world on FIFA rankings. Without any FIFA points this year, losing 2-1 and 5-0 to Nepal earlier in the year in World Cup Qualification, they are still the bottom side in Asia, 46th in the continent. The Azkals, meanwhile, beat Nepal 4-0 when they played in October this year meaning that even at the under 23 level a win was expected before the game.

Group standings

The Philippines are bottom of the group with two losses out of two. They scored in both but conceding five shows the problems at the back. Timor Leste’s win surprisingly sees them top the group as Vietnam’s 0-0 draw against Burma gives Vietnam four points in total. Burma are themselves in third, also with four points, while Laos and Brunei look to pick up their first points as they face off against each other later.

For the Philippines to qualify now would require wins against Laos, Burma and Brunei while hoping for positive results from the other games.

Ali Peek: shot after Practice rushed to hospital

MANILA, Philippines—Talk ’N Text veteran bigman Ali Peek was shot by an unidentified gunman Monday night at the parking lot of the RFM Gym on Pioneer St. in Mandaluyong City.

Ali Peek (Albert Henry Peek), 36, was rushed by two bystanders to the nearby The Medical City after sustaining a gunshot wound in the nape.

Senior Superintendent Armando Bolalin, Mandaluyong police chief, said Peek still managed to approach two passersby and seek help.

“While holding his bleeding nape, he asked two people he saw to bring him to the hospital,” Bolalin said.

Bolalin said he still had to check with the hospital about Peek’s condition.

But the Texters’ head coach Chot Reyes said on Twitter that Peek, a Filipino-American, “is conscious and in stable condition now.”

“The Talk ’N Text family asks the public to respect their privacy at this time. Further details will be released as they become available,” Reyes added.

The shooting happened around 7:15 p.m. It was learned that Peek had just come from a plyometrics workout at RFM gym when the assailant fired at him.

The assailant, armed with a still unknown firearm, shot the basketball player from behind while the latter was “cleaning up his stuff inside the car,” Bolalin said.

After shooting Peek, the gunman fled on foot.

The police still have no clues about the possible motive in the shooting as the investigation is still ongoing.

“We have yet to talk to Peek and ask him who may have done this to him,” Bolalin said.

Wearing a pink dress with diamante studs that had giant frills slashed below the waist, the 22-year-old threw her hands to her face as she was announced the winner.

Last year’s Miss World, Alexandria Mills of the United States, placed the sparkling crown on her successor’s head.

“I believe that the next Miss World should be a woman of responsibility and reason,” Sarcos said before winning the title.

“I believe the woman should be committed to the organization and help people in need. Beauty with a heart”, added the Venezuelan, who works for a broadcasting company and has a degree in human resources.

Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Ruais, was named the runner-up, while Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Perez, came third in the contest, which was back in its home city to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

Some 113 beauty queens from Albania to Zimbabwe took their place on the stage, with the show being broadcast live to an estimated audience of more than one billion viewers in 150 countries.

Around 50 feminists staged a demonstration outside, waving placards reading “Objectification won’t achieve world peace”, “Being a woman is not a competition” and “Sexism is pretty ugly”.

Around a half dozen were veterans of the 1970 pageant protest, which caused a major disturbance.

Inside the Earls Court Two auditorium in west London, the few thousand fans cheered, waved national flags and shouted for their favorites.

To whittle them down to the 15 semi-finalists, several point-scoring rounds were held during the contestants’ tour of Britain over the previous two weeks, with the results revealed on stage.

Miss Venezuela topped the interview round; Miss Dominican Republic, Marianly Tejada Burgos, was named the general sports champion; home favorite Miss England, Alize Lily Mounter, won the beach beauty title, while Miss Kazakhstan, Zhanna Zhumaliyeva, was named top model.

The crowd were played clips from the talent round — where performers sang, danced and gave piano recitals — won by Miss Chile, Gabriela Paz Pulgar Luco.

Miss Ghana, Stephanie Adwoa Agyeiwaa Karikari, and Miss Indonesia, Astrid Ellena Indriana Yunadi, were the joint winners of the beauty with a purpose category, where contestants can highlight a charity project.

With the scores in and only the top 15 going through to the semi-final, Miss Puerto Rico topped the leaderboard, ahead of Miss Venezuela, Miss Philippines, Miss Ukraine and Miss Scotland.

The final seven, chosen by the judges, were Miss England, Miss Korea, Miss Philippines, Miss Puerto Rico, Miss Scotland, Miss South Africa and Miss Venezuela.

It was announced that Ordos in Inner Mongolia, China, will host the 2012 competition.

HUA San Hardware survived a late rally to edge Welflex Engineering 77-73 in the veterans (38 years old and above) category of the Queenielin Basketball tournament last night at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat.

Four players hit double figures for Hua San with George Castenada dealing the most damage with 19 points.

The duo of Noel Grafil and Armando Estoesta each poured in 14 points while Fred Palaspas chipped in 10 points in the victory.

Dexter Carino had another big output with a game-high of 30 points for Welflex. Bobby Boac contributed 18 points and Joel Vinluan added 16 points in a losing effort.

Welflex got off to a better start with Carino going straight to work scoring 12 points in the opening period.

He was getting it done from both the inside and the outside to put his team up 17-14 going into the second quarter.

Hua San managed to step up and contain the Welflex centre in the second period holding them to only one point in the period.

That allowed them to turn things around and eventually take the lead at 34-32 at halftime.

Welflex were having trouble putting points on the board with the lack of firepower.

Vinluan was one of the reasons as he had to sit out having picked up his fourth foul earlier on.

The game remained closed but Hua San were putting up some good defensive stops to close out the period with eight unanswered points that saw them sit on top 58-50 going into the final stanza.

It was slow start to the fourth period as both teams struggled on the offensive end.

The first field goal came in the seventh minute courtesy of Estoesta.

Hua San looked like they were in control when they extended their lead to 68-58 with four minutes to go in regulation.

Hua San were enjoying cleaning the glass for second chance points but Welflex were not backing off and scored the next five points. Boac got the game to 72-70 with a trey with two minutes left.

Noel Reyes had a chance to tie things up in the next possession but split his free-throws before fouling Castaneda who made no mistake and hit both of his shots from the charity stripe to give Hua San a three-point cushion.

Carino would score quickly and the game was down to the wire at 74-73 with 16 seconds left.

Alburo lost the ball at mid court and Vinluan dived to save the ball but was called for a travelling violation. They had no choice but to foul on the inbounds but Alburo hit both his free-throws to make it 76-73 with 12 seconds.

Boac rushed down the court to put up a three-point attempt but Alburo was there to block the shot that sealed the win for Hua San.

"We got overconfident. I told the players to use the clock while we were leading," said Coby Agustin, the head coach of Hua San, in an interview with The Brunei Times after the triumph.

"Experience helped us win the game but we will still need to improve on our communication and also our teamwork," he added.

The second match saw Seria Hawks defeat Termicam 105-74 in Group A of the Open category.

The competition continues with Amigos going up against Termicam in Group A at 8.30pm. The second match pits Underground against OGS Knights in the same group at 10pm.

SEA Games organizers face accommodation woes in Palembang

It seems organizers of the 26th Southeast Asian Games did not see it coming—problems in accommodation.

Less than a week before the SEA Games formally open in Palembang, Indonesia, organizers are still scrambling for hotel rooms for thousands of VIPs, guests, media and tourists who are expected to crowd one of the two major hubs of the games.

The problem has become extremely serious that business tycoon Tommy Winata, a local version of Ambassador Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco back home, has pledged three ships which could house 1,200 individuals.

The games will be played for the first time here and the local organizers found themselves in a dilemma on how to accommodate everybody. Palembang is hosting 19 sports.

The problem stems from the fact that there are only three five-star and four four-star hotels here.

"It's like walking a tight rope," said Philippine deputy chief of mission Romeo Magat, who arrived in Jakarta Friday afternoon.

Magat is also apprehensive about potential traffic jams and the possibility that the roads here would turn muddy once the rains fall. But he said the newly-constructed venues and athletes' village inside the 320-hectare property in the Jakabaring district are all ready.

What could possibly compound the local organizers are the volunteers. Although there are more than enough volunteers, only a minority of them are conversant in English while most of them speak only Bahasa.

The influx of delegates is expected on November 8, when the first batch of Filipino athletes and officials are also arriving.

More than 270 Filipino athletes would be competing in Palembang while the 520 others will be in Jakarta and West Java. —

Vietnam coach scouted under-23 Azkals very well

JAKARTA—Vietnam scouted the Philippines well and knew exactly what the Azkals’ biggest weakness was.

Vietnam’s German coach, Flako Gerd Gotz said he knew some key Filipino players arrived in Jakarta late and did not have enough rest for the opening match of the 26th Southeast Asian Games which his team won over the Philippines, 3-1, Thursday.

Four players, including keeper Richard Muller and striker Manny Ott, planed in straight from Europe to join the rest of the Azkals here.

The other members came from other parts of the world and have been training as a team for less than a month only. The Philippine Under-23 squad has but one homegrown player in defender Neckson Leonora, a part of the starting eleven.

Gotz, a former Bundesliga standout who is also Vietnam’s senior team coach, came in last June to whip the Under-23 squad into a form he thinks is capable of winning the gold medal against the likes of Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

“I don’t know much about football in Southeast Asia,” Gotz said. “I only know it from DVDs (of games). And I think there are three other teams that are capable of winning the gold here.”

Gotz didn’t answer when pressed to name the three, but after a thorough beating handed out to the Azkals, it seems that the Filipinos are not in the equation as far as he is concerned.

The Philippines’ chance at getting another crack at the Vietnamese lies in winning its last four games in Group B, toppling the No. 1 team in Group A and hope that Vietnam also survives its crossover assignment, which could be against the Thais, the Malaysians, the Singaporeans or the host Indonesians.

Michael Weiss, another German, is working round the clock to give the Azkals the cohesion they need.

The Azkals practiced in the morning of Saturday and were slated to go to the Lebak Bulus Stadium, which is about two hours away, in the afternoon to watch matches of teams in their group.

San Beda’s Red Lions and Red Cubs extolled for NCAA triumphs

MANILA, Philippines—Freego Jeans president Nelson Chan extolled San Beda College for winning the NCAA men’s basketball championship for the second straight year and the juniors plum for the third straight season.

“It’s another great year for the San Beda squads and another proud year for the San Beda community and its legion of supporters, including us in Freego,” said Chan, an alumnus of the Mendiola-based school.

“Just as we (in Freego) try to excel in our own trade, the Red Lions and the Red Cubs are likewise doing their utmost best to excel inside the basketball court. We salute them (Red Lions and Red Cubs) for their courageous effort to live up to their school’s creed,” added Chan.

The Red Lions swept the San Sebastian Stags in their recent best-of-three championship to win their fifth NCAA crown in the last six years—allowing them to tie Letran as the winningest school in the 87-year history of the league with 16 titles each.

The Red Cubs, on the other hand, beat the CSB-La Salle Greenhills in their title series which they capped with a 69-61 win. With their 19th juniors crown, the Red Cubs became the league’s winningest squad.

Aside from business tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan, Freego is one of the active supporters of the San Beda men’s basketball team as the main supplier of its playing uniforms and other apparels.

Chan hopes the strong partnership between Freego and San Beda management will last a lifetime, believing the Red Lions have what it takes to build another dynasty in the NCAA.

For years, Freego has supported the Adamson men’s basketball squad, the Philippine wushu team, and the Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball League.

San Beda’s Garvo Lanete, Sudan Daniel, Melo Lim, and Anjo Caram and Adamson’s Lester Alvarez, Rodney Brondial, Roider Cabrera, and Jeffrey Olalia appeared during Freego’s Ultimate Denim Show in Philippine Fashion Week held recently at SM Mall of Asia.

Freego also owns a team in the PBA D-League.

SEA Games: Sinag PHL coach Black picks hosts, Malaysians as tough contenders

Norman Black picked Indonesia and Malaysia as the toughest threats to the Philippines' bid to retain the men's basketball crown in the 26th Southeast Asian Games, but is at the same time wary about Thailand whose strength is suspect.

The hosts and the Malaysians, who holds the reputation of having snapped the Filipinos' domination of the sport in the region in the 1977 SEA Games, are expected to go all out against Sinag Pilipinas.

"But right now, my focus is on the team, letting the players understand the system because we were only complete last Monday," he said. "Hopefully we will be in the level that we want before the competition starts."

And the Thais?

Thailand, because of a leadership crisis in its national federation, was suspended in March this year, but managed to have that ban lifted by the International Basketball Federation early last month.

Thus, no one really knows if Thailand would be bringing in a surprise package in the 26th edition of the SEA Games Indonesia is hosting in Palembang, Jakarta and West Java starting on November 11.

But the draw and schedule, according to Black, favors his team that is composed mostly of collegiate standouts plus Chris Tiu and a few Filipino-Americans.

The Philippines will face Thailand on the last day of the preliminaries in Group A on November 16, allowing Black and his staff to thoroughly scout the team that has been the country's perennial rival in SEA Games basketball.

"We still don't know what kind of team Thailand is because they were suspended before. Now, we will get the chance to scout them during the tournament," said Black.

The Filipinos are bracketed in Group A with Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam while host Indonesia leads Group B along with Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar.

Sinag Pilipinas will face Cambodia on November 14 and Vietnam on November 15. All of Sinag's games in Jakarta is at 12 noon (1 p.m. Manila time).

The top two teams from each group will advance to the cross-over semifinal round where the Nationals could face either the hosts or the Malaysians.

Black after dropping San Sebastian teammates Ian Sanggalang and Ronald Pascual for missing the team's practices, has his pool cut to 14. He will name the final 12 during the team managers' meeting on November 11 in Jakarta.

Besides Tiu, also on the 14-man lineup are San Beda's Dave Marcelo, Garvo Lanete and Jake Pascual; Ateneo's Greg Slaughter, Kiefer Ravena, Emman Monfort, Nico Salva and Justin Chua; Far Eastern University's RR Garcia, National University's Bobby Ray Parks, University of Santo Tomas's Jeric Teng and Jeric Fortuna; and Filipino-Americans Cliff Hodge and Chris Ellis. —

Filipino in UFC 138: Muñoz takes down Leben, asks for title shot

MANILA, Philippines - Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight contender Mark Muñoz turned in a tremendous performance as he defeated the hard-hitting Chris Leben via corner stoppage in the main event of UFC 138.

Muñoz and Leben battled for two brutal rounds, but Leben's corner called for a stop to the fight before the third round could start, as Leben was bleeding profusely from his left eye and could no longer see.

Muñoz won via a second-round technical knockout.

"Chris Leben is a tough, tough competitor. I had to look out for his left hand... I had to get rid of my brawling instincts," Muñoz said of his performance.

It was a strong performance from "The Filipino Wrecking Machine," who showed that he could survive the attacks of Leben, who is known for his one-punch knockout power. But it was Muñoz' wrestling ability that proved to be the difference, as he was able to take down Leben to the ground repeatedly.

On the canvas, Muñoz utilized his ground and pound as he attacked Leben with punches, eventually opening up a cut above his foe's eye through a big right hand early in the second round.

Although Leben survived Muñoz' punches to the body and to the head, he was unable to mount a significant offensive. He attempted numerous times to choke Muñoz, but the Filipino showed impressive defense and was able to counter.

"It's hard to fight when you're choking on blood," Leben said. "He got me good. Muñoz is a national champion... he did a fantastic job on the ground. He outwrestled me tonight."

The fight was the first 5-round non-title fight in the history of the UFC, but it did not go the distance as Muñoz fulfilled his pre-fight prediction, when he said, "It's not gonna go past the second round. Bombs are gonna fly... and I'm gonna finish Chris Leben."

Challenge to the champ

With his victory, Muñoz was confident enough to challenge UFC's middleweight king, Anderson "The Spider" Silva.

"I paid my dues in this weight class and I think I deserve a title shot," Muñoz said in the post-fight interview. "Anderson Silva is by far the best pound-for-pound fighter."

Muñoz and Silva have trained together before, and the Filipino fighter says he respects the champion.

"I give him all the respect and honor, but I think I deserve a title shot right now. I consider him a friend, but right now I'd love to get a title shot," he said.

Muñoz has now won four straight fights and has a record of 12 wins and 2 losses.

Undercard

Thiago Alves took the first submission win of his career, submitting Papy Abedi via rear naked choke in the 3:32 mark of the first round.

Abedi was able to engage Alves early in the round, but was caught with a punch late and Alves finished him off with the submission.

In the co-main event, Renan Barao made hometown favorite Brad Pickett tap out in the first round, also via rear naked choke.

Barao hit Pickett with a knee to the head that clearly rocked the latter, and Barao unloaded with combinations before securing the submission.

Barao and Pickett were awarded $70,000 each for putting on the Fight of the Night.

Qatar wins Asian Champions league football title

Qatar's Al Sadd won their first Asian Champions League title by stunning Jeonbuk Motors 4-2 on penalties following an enthralling 2-2 extra-time draw on Saturday.

Al Sadd goalkeeper Mohamed Saqr saved two penalties in the shootout with Nadir Belhadj scoring the winning kick to seal the $1.5-million first prize and a place at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan next month.

Al Sadd were under pressure throughout the final at Jeonbuk's World Cup stadium but defended bravely and took two of their few chances to seal an unlikely triumph at the end of a campaign that began in the qualifiers in February.

Heavy favourites Jeonbuk, roared on by a passionate 41,805 home crowd, looked stronger at the start and deservedly took the lead through their Brazilian playmaker Eninho in the 17th minute.

The Brazilian was brought down on the edge of the area by Wesam Rizik but picked himself up to fire a sharp, curling, right-foot free kick into the corner of the net past a motionless Saqr.

The Koreans failed to build on their early lead and the Qataris went level 10 minutes later thanks to an own goal by defender Sim Woo-yeon.

The skillful Kader Keita clipped a right-footed cross towards goal and the ball flicked off the head of Sim and past Kim Min-sik who stayed on his line when he should probably have moved to clear it.

Jeonbuk took control of the game as Al Sadd sank back, happy to defend as the Koreans wasted a number of chances. They were punished when Keita scored a brilliant counter-attack goal for the visitors in the 61st minute.

Belhadj broke down the left and fed Ibrahim Khalfan whose cross was brilliantly controlled by Ivorian Keita who then managed to fire the bouncing ball low into the corner of Kim's goal.

The goal looked set to be the winner as Jeonbuk squandered more chances while Saqr mixed brilliant saves with horrendous errors. Then Jeonbuk substitute Lee Seung-hyun scored a 92nd-minute header to force extra time after the keeper had failed to clear a corner. — Reuters

Aidric Chan’s record 64 lifts Ateneo 2

MANILA, Philippines—Ateneo 2 spearhead Aidric Chan fired a series record eight-under-par 64 gross score to ensure another victory by his team in Midgets 2 of the second leg of the ICTSI Inter-school golf tournament at the Aoki course of the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite.

While Ateneo 2 moved beyond reach of Ateneo 3, the battle between La Salle Green Hills 5 and La Salle Zobel for Midgets 1 remained tight.

Chan made an eagle and eight birdies to offset a double-bogey for 62 points under the Molave system of scoring. With the 54 points of his cousin Carl Jano Corpus, Ateneo 2 chalked up 116 for a 36-hole total of 206 and a whopping 66-point lead over Ateneo 3 in the penultimate round of the series.

Chan’s superb effort was just 14 points less than the 76-point output for the round of Ateneo 3 (140) which got 40 from Raphael Samson and 36 from Andres Magalong.

The rest of the pack were farther behind with Ateneo 4 at 109, LSGH 6 at 81, Brent 4 60 and Xavier 8 55.

The LSGH 5 trio of Ryan Monsalve, Spade Barbers and EZ Serapio held off the big charge of La Salle Zobel to stay on top by four strokes in Midgets 1.

Filipino American: Viloria to face Segura in Manila?

MANILA, Philippines - World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight champion Brian Viloria may defend his title against former sparring partner Giovani Segura on December 10 in Manila, according to RingTV.

Segura is the number 1 contender for the WBO belt, but it will be his first time to fight at the flyweight level. He won titles in the light flyweight division.

Viloria won the WBO flyweight belt last July after defeating Julio Cesar Miranda via unanimous decision.

The Filipino-American Viloria holds a 29-3 win-loss record, while Segura is at 28-1-1.

Viloria is currently ranked number 3 in The RING's flyweight ratings, while Segura is number 9 in the magazine's pound-for-pound ratings.

Donaire vows no more boring bouts

MANILA, Philippines - Expecting to face tougher opposition when he moves up to the superbantamweight division, Nonito Donaire Jr. said the other day the warriors looming in the horizon guarantee no more boring fights like his recent shutout over an uncooperative Omar Narvaez.

Donaire admitted he himself was bored in winning every round easily with Narvaez refusing to engage in retaining his WBC/WBO bantamweight titles in Las Vegas.

“I was frustrated in a sense,” said Donaire. “I expected a lot from Narvaez but he just didn’t care about winning. I’m disappointed for the New York fans. I’d never fought anyone like Narvaez before. I tried switch-hitting because fighting a southpaw, I was worried about getting tripped or butted. I wanted a knockout and I lost my patience a little bit. He wouldn’t open up. I couldn’t tee off because he kept moving. I’d throw a combination and before I could land the big one, he’d be out of range. He wasn’t stationary. He was a slick left-hander.”

Donaire said he even brought down his guard deliberately to invite the Argentinian to let his hands go. “Narvaez never hurt me,” he continued. “In the third round, he threw a right that looked like it landed hard because my head moved but what I actually did was to roll with the punch. In the (Fernando) Montiel fight, I did that, too. I got Montiel to throw so I could counter. Because Narvaez wouldn’t engage and stand still, I think I connected only with 60 percent of my power. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d rate his defense a 9 but overall, he’d be a 3 because you don’t win a fight with pure defense.”

As for his own performance, Donaire said he rated himself a 7. “I felt I could’ve done more but in the eighth round, my left leg cramped,” he said. “My biggest mistake was staying out of the gym too long (laying off eight months to settle a contract dispute before fighting Narvaez). I had a lot of missed punches. I’m usually very precise with my counters. But this time, I couldn’t counter with my uppercuts. He kept moving away. I didn’t mind getting hit for the chance to throw. I opened myself up. My plan was to get him to throw combinations so I could counter but he wouldn’t let go. He’d jab and back up with his hands up high.”

Because Narvaez is four inches shorter, Donaire said he didn’t risk an all-out attack to the body. “He’d duck low each time I went to the body and it was like a headbutt waiting to happen,” explained Donaire. “He just wanted to survive. At the last bell, Narvaez celebrated not because he thought he won but because he went the distance with me. I think his goal was not to get knocked out. For me, a win is a win and I’m happy I beat him. After the decision was announced, Narvaez came up to me to say I’m a great champion and I’m really strong.”

Donaire said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum appreciated his effort to make it exciting. “Bob understood what went on in the ring,” Daonire said. “He told me I couldn’t have done anything more because Narvaez covered himself up the whole fight. He didn’t want to fight. Bob knew I wanted to knock out Narvaez. I think he was pleased with my performance.”

In a recent interview by Boxing News editor Tris Dixon, Donaire said he’s moving forward to advance his career. “I want to keep moving, I’m not waiting,” he said. “A year ago, I was a natural 118. I’m pretty much a superbantamweight now and I see my future in the 122 (pound division). Every time I step in that ring, I’m getting better and better and I know that’s a fact. I want to be better than I was and keep the momentum going. It’s beautiful. I feel great about the whole thing. I’m still motivated. I’m still hungry. I want to keep performing the way I am now.”

Donaire said he learned a lot of lessons from the Narvaez fiasco. For one, he won’t balloon to as much as 145 pounds in between fights. For another, he won’t wait too long before going back to the gym. Donaire is now in Manila and plans to return to the US on Nov. 24. He intends to report to the Undisputed Gym in San Carlos City, California, before the month ends and will be ready to fight again as early as January.

“I just want to keep getting bigger and bigger for the Philippines, for the fans and for myself and see where I can bring my skills, ability and hard work,” Donaire told Dixon. “I don’t really think about popularity. I just want to keep moving forward.”

Football: Philippines to face Brunei Darussalam on November 15

Michael Weiss, the German coach of the Philippines Under-23 football team in the 26th Southeast Asian Games, has goalkeeper Roland Roland Muller and the Vietnamese to thank for in their 3-1 loss to the same squad at the start of men's football action last Thursday.

"I thank everyone, my fellow German coach Falko Gerd Gotz more so Vietnam for missing many, many opportunities to score. And I am very proud of our goalkeeper, Muller, who played a fantastic game," said Weiss, stressing that if not for Vietnam's miscues, a dozen of them just in front of Muller, the Philippines got beaten big time.

The Filipinos actually broke the ice against their favored opponents with Manuel Ott, who arrived in Indonesia less than 24 hours before the match, drilling a goal in the 37th minute.

But the Vietnamese kept their poise and leveled the count, thanks to Matt Hartman's own goal, in the 59th minute.

Mueller was all over his territory, making him an overworked goalie, but Lee Hong Thien managed another one in the 74th minute to push Vietnam ahead. And in the dying seconds of the match, Nguyen Van Quyet challenged Muller to a one-on-one and scored his side's third goal.

Weiss credited Vietnam's team chemistry but also partly blamed poor plays on his side to jet lag with some of his players flying in directly from Europe. But he isn't about to lose hope.

"We have four games to play and we will take it day by day. We will put this game behind us," he said.

Next up for the Philippines is Timor Leste on Monday.

Although Timor Leste isn't listed in the high tiers, the team could pull off some surprises after it beefed up its roster with European-based footballers, which the Philippines is already doing. Two of Timor Leste's players, in fact, were invited to a photo shoot for the cover of a local sports magazine.

Former Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Cristy Ramos, now an official of the Asian Football Confederation, confirmed that Timor Leste has Europe-based players reinforcing its team in the 26th SEA Games.

After Timor Leste, the Filipinos face Laos on November 11, Myanmar on November 13 and Brunei Darussalam on November 15.

Group A is considered the Group of Death with defending champion Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

Pacquiao: Marquez has bulked up but I’m used to fighting bigger guys

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is well aware how his November 12th opponent Juan Manuel Marquez has added a lot of muscle weight to get ready for their fight next week. But Pacquiao doesn’t feel worried about the extra size of the proud Mexican warrior.

Pacquiao said to the sports.inquirer.net, “He bulked up but we’re already used to bigger opponents. Margarito, Mosley, De La Hoya. I’ve already proven myself against bigger guys.”

Pacquiao beat a weight drained Oscar De La Hoya in 2008; a 40-year-old Shane Mosley in May of this year. Mosley was considered totally shot at the time Pacquiao fought him and had already been recently exposed as such by Sergio Mora and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Antonio Margarito hasn’t been the same fighter since his fight with Miguel Cotto in 2008. At the time Pacquiao fought him in November 2010, Margarito has fought only once since coming off a year suspension for having loaded gloves.

Technically, Pacquiao fought Margarito, but he didn’t fight the version of Margarito that Cotto fought in 2008. Pacquiao would have been hard pressed to beat that version of Margarito.

My take on Marquez’s extra size is as such: Marquez is not only bigger, but he’s also punching with a lot more power than he did in the past. He’s not weight drained and shot like De La Hoya was; he’s not rusty from inactivity like Margarito was and dealing with a catchweight; Marquez isn’t 40-years-old like Mosley was and coming off of two consecutive poor performances the way that Sugar Shane was when he fought Pacquaio.

While it’s true Pacquiao fought some bigger guys, look at who he fought. When you put Pacquiao’s wins under a microscope, you’ll see that his promoter Bob Arum did a great job of finding guys that were shot or near shot at the time Pacquiao fought them.

Prove us wrong, Floyd

The announcement coming from Floyd’s adviser Ellerbe “ We are going to make the biggest fight possible and everybody knows what the fight is – the little fella” has the boxing world go into overdrive.

They even set the venue and date for the fight. But after digesting the news and comments from Bob Arum that he was not informed about it, the overdrive has gone to a screeching halt.

This announcement has bemused Bob Arum even labelling it as a joke. Bob even added that “They have some kind or reason to do this, Floyd was getting pissed off with all the attention Manny is getting”.

How the announcement was made has only weigh in on public opinion on whether Floyd is really serious about fighting Manny Pacquiao. I have my doubts and these are the reasons.

1. The fight should have been made in 2009. The first negotiation broke down because of Floyd’s demand for RBT 30 days before the fight.
2. The goal post demand of Floyd regarding the RBT keeps on changing from 30 days, 14 days and up to the end of the fight.
3. There were even reports that the USADA should be the only one conducting the test which means that Pacquiao would not be able to train in the Philippines.
4. Floyd’s inconsistent comment about fighting Pacquiao. After announcing “Manny Pacquiao, you are next” at a large audience, he immediately denied it with his comment “Don’t put words in my mouth”
5. Floyd would earn more than 25 million dollars without having to fight Pacquiao and preserve his “O” record.
6. The defamation case and other court cases against Floyd
7. Floyd is not the same fighter he was before his comeback and has not been really tested on his last 3 fights.

Floyd Mayweather Jr is a businessman and he would only take a fight after assessing the risk. His fight with Mosley was a high risk so he took his time signing the contract but the rewards justify the risk. After all, Mosley has not fought for more than 15 months and had a disrupted training when his fight with Berto was cancelled.

With Pacquiao, there is the unknown factor, southpaw and the best offensive fighter. This would be the biggest risk in his career. Would he risks his “O” record against the little fella and one dimensional fighter.

Time is running out on the 34 year old American fighter and a number of boxing fans doubt if he will ever step in the ring with Manny Pacquiao. Will the rewards against probability of failure justify the risk?

World 10-Ball: Women's Rubilen Amit, Iris Ranola bow out

MANILA, Philippines—Southeast Asian Games bets Rubilen Amit and Iris Ranola tumbled out of the Women’s World 10-ball Championships Saturday night by dropping their matches to their Chinese Taipei foes at Robinsons Galleria.

Chen Tsai-pei ended Amit’s bid to regain the crown she won in 2009, ousting the top Filipino bet, 8-7, in the quarterfinals.

Ranola topped her bracket in the group stage but ran into the solid Lai Hui-shan, who prevailed, 8-4, in their round of 16 clash early in the day.

Chen tied the match at 6-6 but missed the 10-ball in the 13th rack. However, Amit bungled a bank shot to the corner as Chen went on the hill.

Amit made an incredible shot in the 14th rack to force a hill-hill finale that Chen clinched.

“I still feel happy. I’m glad to even reach 7-7 after having dry breaks all the time,” said Amit in Filipino. “Thank you very much for the support.”

Virtually climbing up the table for her shots, the diminutive Amit took the first two racks but Chen fought back to take the next two and level the race-to-8 match.

The tall and slender Chen went on to take a 5-3 lead but Amit rallied and finally regained the upperhand at 6-5.

“It’s a tough field and the favorites are falling one by one,” said the Southeast Asian Games double gold winner (9-ball and 8-ball singles) in 2009.

After booting out Ranola, Lai eliminated world No. 20 Allison Fisher of Great Britain, 8-4, in the round of 32.

Amit, the world’s No. 10 player, barged into the quarterfinals with an 8-4 demolition of Keiko Yukawa in the round of 16 played in the afternoon.

The 30-year-old Amit actually stormed to a 6-1 lead.

But she lost her focus in the 8th rack to allow the Japanese, who booted out defending champion Jasmin Ouschan, 8-7, in the round of 32, back in the match.

“I became too excited,” said Amit who could have finished the match earlier but missed the 10-ball using a bridge.

Yukawa stood up to take the rack for 7-3, and the next for 7-4, before Amit closed it out.

Chen made it to the quarters after an 8-6 upset of Doudou Zhou, the world No. 12 from China. Zhou had booted out Monica Webb of the United States, 8-6, who dealt Amit’s only loss in the group stage.

World No. 1 Simming Chen of China also had an early exit after losing to compatriot, No. 17, Sahsha Liu, 8-6, in the afternoon matches.

Also making it to the top 8 were world No. 3 Kim Ga-young, who eliminated Line Kjorsvik of Norway, 8-4, and World No. 7 Kelly Fisher of Great Britain, who routed Japanese No. 17 Akimi Kajitani, 8-2.

Chinese Yun Han and Zu Qing Bi gained the quarters by beating compatriots Xiao Fang Fu Chen, 8-6, and Jia Li, 8-4.
